My soon to be teen son is ALWAYS hogging the phone, and so we are looking at Magic Jack for him. Anyone have this? Reviews? Any better products? HELP! LOL!

I got one about a month ago when Kohls had 30%. I figured if it did not work, kohls is good about returns. So far, it has worked fine. There are many people that complain about it tho, so no guarantees!

you could also look into skype. talking to another person on skype is free(computer to computer). You can pay to be able to call out or in from your computer.

I like magic jack better because I can use my reg phone

We're on our 2nd year using MagicJack. I would recommend it only for cable internet subscribers and to not make calls when anyone in the house is watching streaming video or up/downloading large video-type files.

I would also recommend rebooting the computer it is attached to at least once a day.

Funny, I can't get my teenage daughters to talk on the phone:) They prefer IM'ing, video chatting, even texting.

Skype, google and others have online chatting capabilities. Why not try that first before purchasing the magic jack?

I have a magic jack as my business phone and it does it's job both on cable internet and (low speed) DSL. I love how voice messages are sent to my email and I can listen to them from my inbox. And I like the fact that I use an actual phone.

For novelty purposes, your son may think chatting online is way cooler (and it's free!)

My brother leaves here in MO but his fiancee is currently in Australia so he got her the MajicJack and they love it. They are able to call each other without the huge cell phone intercontinental charges.

My brother inlaw has it and calls it "Magic Crap." He says they just don't receive their calls. I personally have never used it.

My daughter has one and loves it. She hasn't had any problems as far as I know.

We have one and love it.

Be sure to get a usb port with its own power supply, cuz the sucker uses ALOT of power.

It can sound like it is cracking if you are doing stuff on the computer while talking. Light surfing on webapges with no videos or lots of flash are totally fine thou.

Can someone explain how it works? I've seen it advertised, but I don't understand how it works.

Another question to add to this one is do you get to keep your old phone number or will they give you a different one?

I purchased one last November as an alternative to a landline phone.

It goes into the USB on the pc and as long as the pc is on and the internet is up and running- you have phone service.

I swore by MagicJack and raved about it...until I started hearing beeps....like someone one the other end was pressing buttons like touch tones or something. I did some research and found it was normal and felt it was worth free phone service....until the people I talk to tell me to "say that again, I can't hear you ....you are pressing your key pad" or "repeat that, you are accidentally hitting your buttons".... I am not. So they are hearing the beeps.

magicjacksupport dot com is a place I go for tech support and so many complain about it. So, I won't renew...it's so embarrassing.

They don't have the capability to port numbers yet. I ported our home number to a cell phone so I could keep it and then I have a message on my voice mail to also try that number to reach us.

So you have a regular telephone? Or is it a speaker through your computer? Do you have to stay right at your computer then while on calls?

Yes, you use a regular phone. You can have 1 phone plugged into it and then get extension phones that only plug into outlets or you can redistribute the phone jacks in your house, which is what we've done. If you want info on doing something like that, go here to section 5: http://www.voipmyhouse.com/ It's easy.
