This article posted today on orlandosentinel.com:

A group of 200 bus, van and luxury-car drivers called on Orlando International Airport on Monday to put an end to Disney Magical Express, the free shuttle to and from Walt Disney World that the group says is killing its members' businesses.

In a letter to OIA Executive Director Bill Jennings, the Greater Orlando Livery Association asserts that the airport is violating its own rules with unfair business practices that benefit Disney World and threaten hundreds of car-for-hire businesses.

"I'm not sure how the aviation authority could not have seen this coming," said Larry Colleton, an attorney for the association. "[Magical Express] has had a direct and negative impact on small businesses that perform ground transportation at the airport."

Jennings did not return calls Monday for comment.

With Magical Express, introduced by Disney in May, tourists with Disney hotel reservations get free rides to and from the resort and the airport.

The service also transfers tourists' luggage from their airplanes and takes it directly to their hotel rooms.

About 5,000 people have used the service daily since it started, a Disney spokesman said.

One of the major points of contention for the livery association is where Magical Express employees are stationed inside the airport terminal. The "greeters," who wear big, white Mickey Mouse gloves, are on the third floor, where they are supposed to direct those with Magical Express reservations to the buses.

But the livery association says those employees are also soliciting Disney-bound tourists who did not reserve the service ahead of time, meaning they have far greater access to potential customers than other transportation services, which are banned from the third floor.

Face-to-face solicitation of travelers by car and bus services is strictly prohibited inside the terminal, Colleton said.

Mike McKenzie, a car-service owner and member of the livery association's board of directors, said the group had several people pose as travelers without Magical Express reservations who then approached the glove-wearing employees.

"We were solicited by the representatives on the third level," McKenzie said. "That's a violation right there."

A Disney spokesman said Magical Express does not violate any airport policies.

"Disney's Magical Express is offered to all of our hotel guests on a complimentary basis and has established a world-class standard of convenience for tourists," spokesman Jacob DiPietre said. "Our arrangement with the airport is not exclusive, and we have not violated any of the terms of our agreement."

Airport officials met twice with livery association members in July to address concerns about the Disney service, but a third meeting in August was canceled. Colleton, the attorney, asked Jennings to reschedule that meeting in the letter.

"There is great concern the subject contract will provide Disney with a monopoly," Colleton stated in his letter. "There will be less and less competition because more and more small businesses who make up GOLA [the livery association] will no longer exist."

McKenzie said four car-for-hire companies have gone out of business since Magical Express began service.

His business, Wheels to Wings, has cut back from six employees to three. "It was a tough summer," he said. "We basically had cars parked for a good part of the summer."

it's not Disney's problem if they want to give their resort guests more value for their money! for the price of staying on property it SHOULD be included....

The only thing I see a problem with is giving the Disney livery service access to the 3rd floor, but no other livery service access to that floor. I think the airport needs to make them all wait in the same place.

Other than that, I see no problem with Magical Express.

Depnds on what the contract says and if Disney is paying more. At our local airport some cabs and limos are allowed to wait at the curb and others are not. The ones who can park on the curb have to pay the airport more money.

funny thing....planning last year's trip (2004), DH was actually kinda mad saying the same thing! If they want me to stay onsite and give them my money, the least they can do is provide the transportation free :rolleyes2

I always thought it odd that Disney didn't have a bus service for folks staying on-property.

I didn't know this. Makes sense.

I'd heard that they will start charging people for ME in 2006, that it was free this years so they could work out the bugs before hitting people up for money. I don't know how true that is, but if so the livery drivers only need to hang on a few more months.

When you travel to other area's and you stay at a certain hotel, a hotel shuttle will pick you up. The only thing you pay for is the tip.

Most of the car for hire businesses wouldn't be in business if it wasn't for Disney guests. The only valid complaint I see are the cast members being stationed on the third floor. So, if they just had them at baggage claim it would resolve that complaint.

This probably goes back to the whole arguement that ensued when Disney wanted to build a monorail from the airport to the WORLD. That was turned down too.

OK, I don't get this:

Mike McKenzie, a car-service owner and member of the livery association's board of directors, said the group had several people pose as travelers without Magical Express reservations who then approached the glove-wearing employees.

"We were solicited by the representatives on the third level," McKenzie said. "That's a violation right there.".

If their representatives approached the CM's, then how can that count as soliciting? I assume the reps went up to the CM & said "who are you/what do you do?" and the CM answered the question. To me, just answering a question asked is not soliciting.

I use the limo service! Have and always will! Disney needs to follow the "rules" and eventually folks will figure out which mode of transportation suits them best.

::yes:: I agree...I also thought that was strange.

Unless you read the Disney/Mears/GOAA contract you don't know what the rules are.

While the Magical Express is a great service, it is not the bargain everyone that uses it thinks it is.
You don't REALLY think that Disney GIVES anything away do you? all they did was build the cost into the package (aka raise the price)and pass that cost on to the customer coming into Orlando.
Mears charged $35 for a drive from MCO to WDW. I guarantee you the price you ended up paying in your Magical Express package worked out to be WAY MORE than $35!!! Disney is laughing hysterically all the way to the bank. :guilty:

Take some time and plan your own vacation. Book your room yourself, buy your admission passes separately, and plan on just grabbing a car when you land at MCO. You will come out way ahead.
Better yet, use that money that you save and rent a car to wander around off property for a few meals. We have such a HUGE variety of restaurants all close to WDW with great food at much more lower prices, better taste, and variety to boot!
Some of the restaurants that are literally seconds away from WDW are:

Chili's
TGIFridays
Perkins
Pizza Hut
Denny's
Orlando Ale House
Papa Johns
Wendy's
ChikFilet
McDonalds
IHOP
LoneStar Steakhouse
Landry's
Pizzeria UNO
Taco Bell
Red Lobster

There are a bunch of Outlet Malls close by as well with other stores and restaurants nearby them.
You would be shocked at how much money you can save just eating a few meals off property and buying the admission passes seperately.

Magical Express is free for the time of the 50th Anniversary celebration. We have used it and will again in May. I would pay for the service. It's better than regular Mears, and personally, I don't like getting in a car with someone driving that I don't know.

As for the above poster, I don't want to wander offsite. You didn't list any restaurants that I can't get here at home.

But you really don't know the driver for ME either, and just because they work for Disney does not mean they drive safely.

I was just going to say that. If I want to eat at Chili's I don't need to go to Florida. I am going to Disney for the whole experience. Next trip will be 2 1/2 years since we were last there, so I don't even want to step offsite. But if they charge for ME next year I'll probably go with a towncar.
