We were told - and for anyone that is near that area or might be in that area on their travels - the dry dock area will be at the Naval Base in Norfolk, VA for two weeks beginning September 27. Unless you have someone that can give you access to the base, you won't be able to get on base but might possibly be able to see it from various locations - the Hampton Roads Bridge Tunnel location (around that area) and the Monitor/Merrimack Bridge Tunnel area.

Just wanted to offer this info to anyone that might be able to see it. I have let my family know and they do have base access so hopefully they can drive down and see it.

Not sure I would want to see her in dry dock....might be a little depressing...:(

Well I figured for some, this might be the closest they will ever get to seeing it in person - if they won't have the money to ever cruise or just aren't cruising type of people. Sorry if it depresses anyone!

Does anyone know what the crew does while the ship is in drydock....we know some of the cruise staff who are on vacation now, and return to the ship in three weeks....what do they do with them....give them all two weeks off??

I "wonder" if they have them cover the Wonder so some of that crew can take some vacation time??

I live in Norfolk and I remember that they let the crew off the ship to do some shopping etc. There is a nice place in downtown Norfolk called Waterside and McArthur Mall. There is a ferry that runs from Norfolk to Portsmouth that goes right by the Magic so it is a great view and the ferry is 75 cents round-trip.You can see people walking around on the deck. And yes, it is very depressing to see the ship because you just want to go onboard.

Our assistant server (Laura from Romania) told us that many of the crew members will be working on board while the Magic is in dry dock. She said she was told one of her main duties would be to help rip up all of the carpet and replace it :p not a 'fun' job.

Our server said that he (Gabor from Hungary) will be in between contracts so that he'll be back in Budapest.

On our cruise our server and assistant server told us about the last dry dock. They said that they had to work hard almost the entire time cleaning all areas of the ship. Much of the time the electricity was off so no A/C and everything was dark. They are not used to the "cool" weather in VA in the fall (had to buy coats last time). Needless to say they were not looking forward to dry dock!

I believe all three of our servers (our head server, main server and assistant server) were all going home for vacation for two weeks. I know two of them said that was what they were doing. Do they always do the dry dock in Norfolk? Just wondering because it appears they do given some have done this before.

I think I heard that there are only 2 dry docks close enough that are big enough to hold the Magic and the Wonder. Last time Norfolk had space available so it was scheduled there. Maybe this time they are going back because of previous experience.
