Magic bands work before checking in?

I will be arriving at Disney World by car and want to go straight to the Magic Kingdom. I then am going to check in to my room in the afternoon. I have my magic bands. Will they work to get my in the park or do I have to check in to activate them? Thanks!

They will work for park entry. But if you have a dining plan you'll have to check in to get access to your dining credits.

Sort of a similar question...my friend is checking in the day before I arrive, I've already got my MB linked to her reservation, will it work to let me access the resort?
