Magic Bands and Fastpass+ 101

What are the basics of Magic Bands and Fastpass+? We typically go to WDW every year but skipped 2014. Our last trip to WDW was in Oct 2013 while Magic Bands and Fastpass+ were being tested but not at our resort so this is all new to us. Even though we're WDW veterans, I'm feeling like a fish out of water with the new bands and FP+. Any info, tips, suggestions would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!
