Magic Band ? for one day visit

Here is my situation. Going to Florida with 2 other couples, no kids. Part of trip will be at WDW. Staying 2 nights at POP. 1st day just bumming on grounds and Downtown Disney. 2nd day, going to Epcot. HOWEVER, my DH has an unused day on a ticket from 1999. According to what I have read the only way to prove or disprove the existing day is to have it read at a Disney ticket booth. If the day is valid, his ticket will be replaced with a new one. Everyone else just buying a one day base ticket. If POP is using Magic Bands, how are we to get FP?? If we have a Magic Band as a hotel key and buy our one day tickets to Epcot at the Epcot gate, what do we get for tickets?? I like the Magic Band idea, but when you have no dining plan and are just visiting for a day, how does it work??? Help!
