Magic Band Experience

As a "seasoned" Disney guest, the Magic Band (MB) concept seemed intriguing. Remembering back to having to be the card "mule" for everyone's ticket pass card, room key card, the Disney ID card, etc., the idea of a single repository for all the pertinent data seemed like a great idea. Well, although I am sure Disney is still refining things, there are some important things to know:

1) You can only get three fast passes on the band per day. HOWEVER, your admission cards still function at the fast pass kiosks, just as before. So when you walk in the park immediately grab a regular paper ticket Fast Pass with your ticket card.

2) If the ride you have a Fast Pass+ (FP+) for on your band is out of order (happened to us four times in one week,) you have to find a Disney employee to reprogram your band to a new time. There are a few self services kiosks where you can do this but they are hard to find and scattered. (You can also use your phone unless the time for the Fats Plus + has changed.

3) If you are a DVC member and want to take advantage of your 10% discount at a gift store, you still have to carry your DVC member card AND a photo ID.

So now the count is; wear your band, carry your ticket card, carry a photo ID and carry your DVC member ID.

4) Being there seven days, we had dinner in a variety of restaurants and the quick service locations seemed to function well with the credit card imbedded in the magic band (with a personal pin needing entered) but at one of the sit down restaurants (Coral Sea) the hand held band reader would not work and my light blue Disney ID card (received at check-in) was needed. Another card to carry.

5) Using FP+ we would book four fast passes (family of four) on rides such as Rock n Roll coaster, knowing that our 4 year old was 3 inches shy of the 48". My wife would ride with the 6 year old who is tall enough. Then we would swap bands with kids and the 6 year old would ride with me. (Yes we have tall kids and the 6 year old rides ANYTHING that moves.) I did notice later in the week that when you scan your band your name comes up on the monitor but I don't think an age is displayed.

6) The kids naturally got into the act scanning their magic band on any Mickey kiosk they saw. This was mot amusing to the Disney personnel at "Be our Guest" while we waited for a picture with the Beast.

7) The magic bands are a favorite of the photographers who scan you in and shoot replacing the old Photo Pass (hey - one less card!)

8) The bands weren't particularly uncomfortable but it was cool while we were there. In the summer it may be another story. They are easy to take off so my 4 year old thought it was a game to switch arms, take off my band, etc. (yes he survived the trip) so you are paranoid about it falling off somewhere.

9) Smart phones - Disney must have invested in smart phones. You can use "My Disney Experience" on a smart phone to reroute a FP+ but good luck with the connectivity. We heard there were 69,000 people in Magic Kingdom the day after Thanksgiving and it was impossible to sign in and effectively do anything on the smart phone. It worked great at the less crowded Epcot earlier in the week but the bandwidth is lacking hen there is a large crowd. Ironically, that is when you need the phone to check wait times, change FP+, make dining reservations - and oh yeah (one more thing to carry). I actually saw people carrying IPads as well.

I hope this helps you if you are heading into the fray. The Tuesday before Thanksgiving in Magic Kingdom we were able to hit 23 separate attractions (not counting repeat rides) using FP+, regular fast passes, the phone to monitor wait times and hustling so it can be done but you have to plan, plan, plan.

Have a great vacation!!!!!!!!!

So if I can use my plastic pass as well as the band for a FP, I suppose this means that it would be possible after all to get FPs in more than one park/day?

Yes until they get rid of paper FP. Animal kingdom is testing right now not giving out any paper FP that means all of the machines are turned off and everyone has to use FP+.

OMG, please tell me you are joking! AK isn't using ANY paper FP's right now!! My family and I are going in 3 weeks and we are AP as florida residents, so we never stay on disney property...which basically means we are SCREWED. OMG.

Why are you screwed?

As pass holders, you should already have APs with RFID chips embedded. (If not, they'll exchange your current APs for the RFID versions at Guest Relations.)

Once in the park, instead of going to a paper FastPass machine, you'll go to one of the many computer terminals to schedule your ride times.

The paper FP machines have been disabled because ALL guests now have access to the FastPass+ system.

I just renewed my AP earlier this month and there was no mention of RFID chips embedded in them. :confused3 I was under the impression that the MagicBands would automanitcally be mailed out to all AP holders when the testing phases are all complete. I was told by a CM that it would be 'early 2014' when this happens. I just saw on another board that the testing phase was to be complete on Jan. 5th but I'm sure that's not official b/c the WDW site does not say a date yet under the pasholder info link that explains the bands for us. I did receive a plastic card instead of my paper pass this past summer.

Disney has repeatedly said that Passholders will get complimentary MagicBands. But they have not begun issuing them yet.

(For the record, Disney hotel guests will also get free Bands. Day guests will get plastic RFID cards and be able to purchase MagicBands if they wish.)

The plastic AP you received has the RFID chip. Disney began issuing APs with the chips in March 2013, and allowed current Passholders to exchange if they wished.

The plastic card is the RFID card instead you just tap it to enter the park same as a magic band. AP holder have not gotten magic bands yet unless you have already had a disney resort reservation that way you were able to receive them if you wanted. I have also heard they will start issuing the magic bands for AP holders in early 2014.

Can anyone tell me if I'll be able to link a disney gift card to a band for a teenager? Thought this might be a easy way to let teen use spending money while at Diz.:firefight

Ditto Bayou, have the same question. Worse comes to worse I'll just carry the gift card with everything else.

No.

However if you're a Disney resort guest, purchases can be charged to the room account using a MagicBand. Then the room charge can be paid off with a Disney gift card by stopping at the resort front desk.

Ok, am I understanding this correctly? Besides tapping the card to get into the park w/my new plastic RFID card, I am now able to use it for the testing at AK for day guests that they are doing (until whenever it is I get the MagicBand in the mail to use FP+)?

Yes you use your card just as if you would a magic band

Well, yes, she is sort of scr****. Everybody that is staying on property will be able to make their FP+ reservations 6 months in advance. When she arrives at Disney, she will make her choices on "that day" from what is left. Her choices will be extremely limited.

You don't get to make you reservations six months in advance only two months out 60 days ADRs can be made 180 thats and from the looks of the test going on at AK right now it has not been a big issue they will have FP+ available when she arrives it's just like paper FP she needs to get there in time to get them.

Are you just guessing that options will be limited or can you point me to active discussions which support this position?

I highly doubt this will be an issue. You have to step back and look at the big picture. Right now Disney is capping every guest at just 3 FPs per day. And in some cases they are tiering the FPs so that you can't get 3 headliners. For instance, at Hollywood Studios you can only choose ONE FP from a group that includes Toy Story Mania, Fantasmic, Rock N Rollercoaster and Beauty & the Beast.

Additionally, they've greatly expanded the number of attractions offering FP+. Getting a FP for Haunted Mansion or Tough to be a Bug may seem ridiculous to seasoned guests. But some people will do it. And some FP+ additions like the character meet-and-greets and parade / fireworks viewing will be very popular.

In the end you've got MORE ATTRACTIONS offering FP+, LIMITS on how many headliner FP+s can be used in a day and a cap of just 3 FP+ total per guest.

You can't compare this to ADRs where restaurants can only accommodate a couple thousand people per meal while there are 30,000 - 70,000 in the park. These attractions have plenty of capacity for FastPasses. And it's extremely probable that guests will find many options available when they enter the park.

That said, rides like TSM and Soarin could prove troubling on the busiest days given their popularity. Parade and fireworks viewing could be somewhat hard to get since it's just one showing per day. And guests who arrive late in the day will find their FP+ availability limited.

But nobody needs to worry that the likes of Space Mountain, Everest or Star Tours will be completely booked before 9am(or 10am, or 11am...) Not gonna happen.
