We just returned on Sat from our 8th Disney Magic Cruise. There were 4 of us travelling this time. In March we were a group of 10 and it was much more fun when everyone was able to go. This time it was my mom and her husband, my daughter, aged 23 and me. While we had a good time, it wasn't the best. Part of that reason was because we were missing the family members that couldn't go this time.

Here are some of the highlights and lowlights.

Things we really liked -

The weather was quite nice, no rain and beautiful weather for Castaway Cay. The water was still warm enough to swim and I don't like water unless it is warm. It was wonderful, a little chilly when you first get in, but you warm up pretty fast. We were the first ones at Serenity Bay that morning.

The lunch at Castaway Cay was really good. We all had steak! We even ate it with plastic utensils, it was really good.

Palo - it was the frist time we went and our server was Noemi who we had as a regular server in the dining rooms in March. She has moved back to Palo and it was good to see her again. We had dinner at 6:00, in time to watch the sunset and the food and service were really good.

Chocolate Souffle at Palo - really good.

We had no trouble finding chairs on the decks or pools, even on sea days. We noticed that people were not saving chairs like we had seen before.

Things that were just ok -

Our servers and cabin steward. While they did just fine, we didn't find anything special about them. In March, we had a wonderful team all the way around and they seemed to go above and beyond what was normal. This trip, everything was good, just not exceptional.

The house band - they were just ok, nothing special. It looked to me like they were still trying to learn their music. Once we saw them in the promenade lounge and he was trying to read the music and sing at the same time. It really seemed like this was the first time he had sung this sytle of music. It wasn't bad, just kinda odd.

The food - better in March, It was ok, just not great or anything special.

Things that were not up to the usual standard --

The new navigators. We don't like the new format. It seemed more difficult to read and we had a hard time finding information on them. Liked the old ones much better.

No Steel Drum Band at the pools. We really missed the caribbean music while sitting on deck or at the pool. I don't know if they are gone or just on holiday. We couldn't seem to find an answer to that question.

The lunch time options. We thought the buffets at Topsiders were terrible. The lunch menu in Lumiere's was awful. We had a hard time finding what to eat for lunch. One day while eating breakfast in Lumiere's we asked the waiter what they were going to serve for lunch. He said and I quote "I don't recommend". He said they have really cut back on the options at lunch. Next cruise I think we will sleep in and eat a late breakfast and skip lunch. We used to always look forward to eating in Lumiere's.

The amount of talking done in the movie theater. We went to see a movie in Buena Vista Theater. There was so much talking, it was hard to hear the movie. My daughter and mom went to watch another movie and they left, it was too hard to hear. I think they should have a cast member in there to control the volume of noise. I know you don't have to pay to see the movie, but consideration for others would sure be nice. Also, there were so many people who just wandered in and out. That's ok, but sit on the ends, not in the middle of a row where you have to crawl over people.

The production shows. Ok guys its time to get some new ones. We didn't go to any of them. I know it is a big deal to change the shows, but there are so many repeat cruisers on the ship. Maybe they should offer some other things to do during the show times for those that have seen the same shows so many times.

Rich Purpura.- ok he has been on the Disney Magic every time I have gone. He is really funny and he makes me laugh outloud. However, he needs to get some new material. I'm sure if he is that funny, he could come up with some new jokes or routines. They have literally been the same show all 8 times I have cruised.

The ice cream at Goofy's. They took away all the toppings except chocolate and strawberry syrup. No more sprinkles and no more cookies. What's up with that?

The pictures at Shutters - they are almost all 8 x 10's and sooo expensive. Bring back more 4 x 6 or 5 x 7. How about offering them on your tv screen like other lines. That way maybe the cost could be lowered since they don't have to print them all. I can imagine how many pictures are just thrown out.

I guess that's all I can think about right now. We still had a great time and are looking forward to going again this March during Spring break.

I forgot to mention that we did dinner at Topsiders twice during the week. We really thought the meal was wonderful. They have menu dining similar to the dining rooms. The menu offers alot of the same entrees as in the dining room. On Thursday, semi-formal night, we went to Topsiders and had lobster. My daughter got a pasta with chicken dinner that she said was really good. Someone else in our party got the porterhouse steak that they offer every night. It was really good and much bigger than any steak in the dining rooms. Also the ceasar salad was the best of any of the dining rooms. It had bacon bits in it and it was the best on the ship. We got it both nights we ate there. I also tried the prime rib the first night and it was a bigger piece than I got in the dining room and it was just as good.

The service wasn't quite up to the standard of the regular dining, but it was still nice. They usually had 3 selections for dessert each evening.

In case you have never been to Topsiders for dinner, this is what it is like -

You go in on the left side (usually the kids buffet). They seat you at a table that has been set with placemats and all utensils and glassware. They bring bread and menus. They had several items to choose from, always porterhouse steak on the menu currently. Your server takes your drink order, entree and dessert order. It took about an hour to complete dinner - a bit quicker than the dining rooms. There wasn't alot of people there, but more than we experienced on a previous cruise. There were probably about 10-12 tables of people.

This is something I would definately do again. We would check the menu of our scheduled dining room during the day and then go up to Topsiders and see what they were offering. Based on looking at the two menus, we could decided which one we wanted to go to.

Thanks for the good the bad and the ok. Great tip on Topsiders.
Thanks for taking the time to write a TR. :sunny:

I hope you will take the time to write to DCL and tell them of the few things that you didint like.
Many of us have written lately about the removing the steel drum band and we have asked them to bring them back. They really set the mood for the cruise for us, we loved it.
So if you really meant what you said, please take 5 minutes and ask them to bring them back. We really appreciate your help.

Do you know for sure that the Steel band is no longer or maybe they are just on holiday? No one seemed to know the answer when we asked.

I was on the same cruise and I agree with most of your comments. Overall our cruise was fabulous and we especially enjoyed our servers Erasmo and Kira. We only had three "not so magical" situations.

The new navigators are a bit confusing, there is a weekly navigator and a daily navigator and I think some information got lost in the shuffle. We were really looking forward to Tea with Wendy but the event was never published in either navigator. I finally asked Guest Services on Monday only to find out that it was completely booked.

For some reason you are not allowed to buy alcohol in Grand Caymen for security reasons. The store I went to spotted my KTTW and refused to sell to me. Grand Caymen is the only place I've ever found rum creme so I really wanted to stock up.

Our other big surprise was at the hair braiding area on Castaway Key. The sign does post prices of $1 per braid, $2 per cornrow, and an extra $.50 for long hair. I wan't sure what a cornrow was and my daughter has shoulder-length hair so I was expecting a bill somewhere in the $40-50 range. The lady asked my daughter to point to a picture of what she wanted but never gave me an estimate. My mistake! Two painful hours later she pushed a bill at me for $108 and asked me to fill in the tip section!! They managed to pack over 60 itty bitty braids on her 8 year old head.

Like I said, overall it was wonderful and we'll be back on board next year.

Glad you had a good time.

Sorry about your hairbraiding experience - ouch that was expensive and two hours of time out of a beautiful day.

We thoroughly enjoyed Castaway Cay - the day was wonderful and we spent all our time at Serenity Bay, the food was great and we loved it.

Our servers were Tibor and Gideon. We were never sure about Tibor. His sense of humor was a little funny and we were never sure if he was laughing at us or with us!

Yeah, those navigators were a real pain. We had waitlisted for Afternoon tea and while they never called us, we never saw it listed on the navigators. We thought about going to see if there were any no shows, but we could never find out just when it was being held.

Like I said, most of our trip was great. We are planning on going again in March.

Sorry Delo4, but they have removed the steel drum band from both ships a few weeks back. :sad2: They also do not have a live band on the Wonder anymore. Only a DJ and CD's in the club at night and at the sail away party.

They also cut back on the Castaway club reception. They use to have cocktails, shrimp, lots of bite size desserts, kabobs, punch, coffee and assorted snacks.
Now they serve can a pops and Mickey crunchies ,that is all. 2 people on different cruises wrote in their trip reports that the can a pops were warm too!!

I find it very sad!! I love DCL but so many cutbacks lately is taking away from the magic for us!! That is why we are writing to them, we just want them to bring back the music because we love it.

I discovered Rum Cream on my Honeymoon in 1993 in Jamaica. I came home with 2 bottles and lost them both in the 1994 Northridge Earthquake. Sometime ago I did a little searching and found there are few places on the internet that sell it, but I never actually ordered it...we are sailing next September on the Magic/Eastern and I'm hoping to pick some up on the trip!

I second that!

I'm sorry to hear that the Steel Drum band is no more. I really enjoyed listening to them. I let Disney know. I I sure wish they would bring them back.

We also had a great time, agree with the navigator problem though.

Smooch, glad to hear you all had fun also, have fun next year.

Thanks for taking the time to share your experience! Looking forward to making my own magic in 8 weeks! :woohoo:
