No sense playing around, right? Since I had such a horrible rash develop, I need to know what caused it. I have to take antibiotics for the dentist. I read if you are allergic to Cefzil, there is a high possibility of being allergic to pennicillin too!

Just had an epiphany!!!! I had tightness in my chest after I started the CEFZIL and thought it was from the sinus infection/whatever else I had. Maybe it was a REACTION, not caused by being sick.

I see an allergist. I went through all sorts of testing. However, I have enviromental allergies w/ asthma.

I actually never knew they could pre-test you for allergies to medications. Some people can take a medication 99 times- and not have an allergy develop until the 100th- so how do they test for this??? I know this happened w/ me a sulfa. I took it plenty of times w/o issue. Then started a new script and had such a bad reaction I had to be taken to the ER and take 10 days worth of steroids. I know the reaction happened within minutes of taking the med.

And yes- Cefzil has some similar properties and is somehow related to the Penicilin family. My mom had an allergic reaction to Cefzil last winter and now can't take Penicillin products either.

Right, but I guess once you DO have the reaction, you will then test positive.

How do they test for those drugs? We learned of my through food allergy testing when my tests came back showing I was allergic to eggs.

I believe they inject you with small amounts...never had it done. I just talked to my rheum. who said skin testing is "not nearly 100% accurate" for antibiotic allergies.

I am not a fan at all of skin testing for several reasons - one of them being they are not as accurate. When they injected me with egg whites I didn't have an immediate reaction, same for when I eat eggs. It took a while for the reaction to occur but since it wasn't in their time frame they said I wasn't allergic. Sorry but I believe the blood tests and my body over the skin testing.

My dd11 is allergic to Cefzil and penicillin , has been since 3 months old.
