Today I got our first call from the Make-A-Wish director. Wow. Even though I *knew* it was coming eventually, it was amazing to get the call and feel like this is really going to happen. Until now I'd only talked with our Social Worker and Dr., so this just felt official.

Then, because we need to make this happen very quickly, I got a call from the Travel Wish coordinator. She wanted to know if we had any dates in mind and said we should get a call to meet with Maddox's Wish Granters early next week. Truly incredible.

Super excited to get all of the plans in place!

So I'll back up a little and tell you about Maddox.

Maddox was born with Hypo-plastic Left Heart syndrome (HLHS). We did not know before he was born, but we were blessed to find out within 24 hours of his birth. HLHS basically means the left side of his heart did not develop and does not function.

After meeting with Dr's and learning more about his condition, we decided to proceed with the first of 3 planned surgeries to help his heart function as best it can, until it wears out. At that point, he will need a heart transplant. His first OHS was the day he turned 1 week. We took him home just 3 days shy of his 1 month birthday. Unfortunately, the day he turned 1 month, we rushed him back to the hospital in respiratory failure. He had a massive infection in his incision and had to have another, this time emergency, OHS to have the infection removed. We spent another 2 weeks in the hospital. Thanks to AMAZING doctors, he is still with us today.

Maddox's next surgery was at 4 1/2 months old. He was out of the hospital in 6 days. It was amazing. The first year was rough, but after getting tubes placed in his ears just before his 1st birthday he stayed really healthy. We have enjoyed the last 2 1/2 years so much and at times have almost forgotten how sick Maddox really is.

In February we, with his doctors, decided that this summer is the time for his next surgery. Even though we knew it was coming, it has been a major reality check for us. We had discussed whether or not to approach Make-a-Wish at this time, but after talking with Maddox's doctors, the social worker, some other Wish families and between ourselves, we felt that now is the time.

One of our concerns is how young he is. Will he remember this trip? Will he wish later in life that he could have a "do-over"? We don't know the answer to those questions, but we feel that it's important to have this time before his surgery. And one thing we do know, Maddox will love it right now.

Maddox LOVES all things Disney. He asks to watch Mickey first thing every morning and hates that I make him eat breakfast first. He calls himself Pluto Puppy, his sister Daisy, Dad Mickey and Mom Minnie. At some point in almost every day since Christmas he has asked me if he could "Eat noodles with Mickey". I have no idea where he came up with this idea, but hey it combines 2 of his most favorite things. Noodles and Mickey. We weren't sure if traveling to Florida would even be possible, so I told him he could ask his Dr. It was so cute. After we had talked everything over, I said "Maddox, wasn't there something you wanted to ask Dr.?" He got this big smile on his face and said "I eat noodles with Mickey?" She told him yes and I think he thought he was going right then. (Instead we had to take him to the lab for a blood draw )

So at this point we are waiting to hear from his Wish Granters early next week and get the ball rolling. Because his surgery is coming up in early June we are kind of rushing the process. I am grateful they are willing to do so. Our first choice of dates is within the first 2 weeks of May. If those don't work, our back up plan is the 3rd week of April. It's coming up fast! So even though it's not "officially official", we are planning as much as we can right now. It's been so cool to read other's PTR and TR's and learn so much about how magical these trips are. Thanks everyone for taking the time to share!!

Hi Luke's Wife!!! I am Judy, another heart Mom. We had my daughter, Lisa's wish trip in October and it was simply amazing!!! I understand about trying to pick the timing of everything and KNOW why you want to do it before the next surgery. :grouphug::grouphug: You don't have a crystal ball to tell you what the future holds and you have seen all to well what OHS does to a
child. We waited until Lisa was old enough to pick the wish, but there were scary moments when we wondered if that day would come. Maddox might not remember the trip, except in pictures, that is true. BUT, he will ALWAYS be able to go back to GKTW and have day visits, whenever you go to Florida. And I KNOW at 2.5 he will enjoy his trip! I hope you don't mind my saying all of this, I just wanted you to know as another heart Mom I get it! :grouphug::grouphug:

I am looking forward to reading more of your planning and hope to see pictures soon.

to the DIS!!!!!

Welcome!

We just got home from our daughter's Wish Trip on Sunday. You're going to have an amazing time!

Hi and welcome ! Another "heart" mom here. :goodvibes

Like Judy said, while Maddox won't really remember everything about this trip, YOU sure will and he'll know that he had a wonderful time. Just take lots of pics and video to cherish those memories.

Looking forward to hearing more about your trip !

Ps ... My grandson is named Maddox. :thumbsup2

:welcome: You, Maddox and your family will have a blast no matter what. Pictures will definetly bring it alive for him when he is older.

We had a very fast trip. Not too much time to plan. But we had so much fun! I can't wait to read more and hear about the trip once it happens!

Thanks for the warm welcome. I've been reading all of your PTR and TR's. Amazing. We have a book from our Disneyland trip my parents gave us for Christmas a couple of years ago, Maddox wasn't a year yet and he LOVED it then. He could not get enough of the characters! He loves to look at his Mickey Book all the time, so I want to make him one after our trip to have in the hospital. Something he can look at and remember having so much fun. :)

Hi TRACI!! Glad you added your name to your siggie. :goodvibes:goodvibes Our daughter was in the hospital less than two weeks after our trip and it was WONDERFUL to have the book with pics to look at...it was also surreal to think what we were doing less than two weeks earlier. GREAT IDEA on the pictorial. Maddox is gong to have an AMAZING time!

As soon as I figure out how to post pictures, I will.

Maddox got his magic key in the mail today. We've talked about him making a wish, but this is the first time the kids have seen or heard that he really truly gets to do this. They are pretty excited!

I couldn't get him to smile when I was taking a picture, but he was grinning in between. Here is the invitation castle.

Maddox thought the roof of the castle was a party hat.

How precious is that!!!:goodvibes What is the next step? I think each chapter does things different. We never got a key or invitation. That is such a neat thing to do.

We wait to hear from the wish granters, supposed to be early next week. Super excited! Our chapter seems to do some pretty cool stuff. The invitation is for Maddox to take the key to the Wishing Room at the top of the Wish tower where he will get to make his wish. We will do that after we meet with his Granters and he tells them what his wish is. He loves that key! He has been carrying it around all afternoon.

SO cute !! What a great idea .. we didn't have anything like that either, I love it ! :goodvibes

Thsnks for shraing Maddox's story! I am a wish granter here in Minnesota and sent many kids to GKTW. Each chapter does things a little bit different but the wish granters add the little touches that make the wish special. This is a great idea!!

The Wish Granters are coming tomorrow evening! We aren't going to tell the kids... we'll let it be a surprise. I'm terrible at keeping secrets! I get so excited and want everyone else to feel excited too!

I'm working on a little "thank you" project. I love the idea of giving out something as a thank you for making this trip special, and someone mentioned business sized cards? Or something someone else said made me think of business sized cards. I was thinking of using Shutterfly's gift tags, with a $10 off coupon it would end up being about $20 for 50 cards. OR I went to VISTA prints and can get 250 business cards free and pay just $7ish for shipping. There's no way I need 250 cards, but the savings is definitely worth it.

I decided to make Maddox a 'wish' blog, but it's only private for now. I thought it would be good to document what's going on, but don't necessarily want it public quite yet. Part of that is until plans are finalized, I don't want to share too much, ya know? So I think on the card I will put something like:

Thanks for making Maddox's Wish Magical
Love The Bulkley Family
(blog address)

The back will be blank so maybe I'll have the kids color on the back? or we could write a personalized note for the extra extra special occasions etc. Just some thoughts!

I think that is a wonderful idea! When I was a CM, I loved receiving things like this, which didn't happen very often. It is a good way for the CMs to feel appreciated. They could be used in the Village too, in the event that there are volunteers that you want to thank in a special way and/or keep in touch with.

I agree it's a wonderful idea. IT never crossed my mind at the time. I guess our trip came up on us so fast.... We sent picture thank you's after to those that we had information on. BUT that didn't include CM's or volunteers.

Great thinking!

Maddox's wish granters K and K came over tonight. It was fun to meet them and talk with them about what Maddox is wishing for. They brought Maddox a stuffed Pluto, they heard through the grapevine that he calls himself Pluto, and Bailee got some way cute Minnie Mouse sunglasses.

I was worried that the kids would be a little shy, but they were great. Maddox officially gave his Wish. He said "I see Mickey?" I had told them earlier he had asked if he could eat noodles with Mickey, so they suggested writing down eating with Mickey as well. He also needs a 2nd wish in case the 1st one doesn't get approved. (Because we've already talked about this with Dr. P, there should not be a problem with it getting approved.) After talking we decided on a Mickey Clubhouse. We asked Maddox if he would like a Mickey Clubhouse he said "No, I see Mickey?" We told him yes he can see Mickey but would you like a Mickey Clubhouse? Of course he said yes.

So we filled out the paperwork and they will submit it and then will schedule a time for Maddox to go to the Wishing Tower to make a wish and have it granted. He really has no concept of time, so the waiting will be hard. But, once we have dates we'll make a countdown chain or something. We are hoping for the 1st or 2nd week of May. Exciting!

I also made a blog for the wish... it's maddoxmakesawish.blogspot.com

I'm thinking I'll post everything there now, during, after, and make a blog book of the whole process. :)

Thanks!! Your comment makes me really excited to do this. Even without being a wish trip, I think the CM's really are amazing, so I can only imagine what being on a wish trip is like. I have read so many amazing trip reports and just am in awe of how kind and generous people can be. It will be fun to be on the lookout for people to give these cards too, and I think it will help us really focus on all the good people do.
