Lupus - DW lines and sun sensitivity

I have lupus and need to avoid the sun as best as possible. I've noticed there are some rides whose lines don't have sufficient shade coverage. I have no problem waiting in lines that are indoors or adequately shaded, but can't do the sun.

Has anybody dealt with this before? How was it handled? Who do I need to speak with and do I need to provide a doctors note from my rheumatologist?

Thank you!

I think you are asking about DAS card you don't need a Dr note you just need to tell guest services why you can't wait in line I don't know if you would be able to get one you are in the sun thru out the parks not just in lines

I can usually find a shaded path and if I'm in the sun it's for short stretches. That's a big difference from sitting in the sun waiting in line for 30+ minutes.

You don't need a note for a DAS. However keep in mind that the DAS only works for things that have Fastpass lines. Most of the lines are covered, and the ones that aren't are usually for things like meet and greets that don't have a FP line, so you probably won't get much use of the DAS. So as a backup, make sure you are dressed appropriately and plan lots of down time. Most of your transit time in the parks will be in the sun, as a PP said.

You should be wearing appropriate sun protection since a lot of the parks aren't shaded.

I have this hat It actually looks cute on, and it rolls up small and will fit in a bag. It dries fast, too.

Some sun protection clothing and a super high sunscreen will help you, too.
For sure! I'm well versed on wearing sun protection, unfortunately. :-) Thank you for the recommendation on the hat!

Since there is no way to avoid the sun in the parks, and most of your exposure will be outside of queues anyway, the only suggestion I have, other than the already suggested high SPF sunscreen, sun protective clothing, and a good hat is the use of a parasol. You do need to be careful you don't poke someone with it, but it would give your upper body more protection.

Thank you. I know I can't avoid the sun, I feel like that needs to be mentioned. What I need to avoid is sitting in the sun for 30+ minutes at a time. I'm very familiar with UPF clothing, hats, sunscreen and the like. :confused3

Unless you go on one of the busiest days no line will keep you in the sun very long

And this is the problem with cast members qualifying disabilities. I'm going to assume you are not familiar with lupus and move on.

:confused3 The statement had nothing to do with Lupus (which, for the record, I have). The statement was about the lines at WDW. And it was accurate - most of the lines at WDW are not in the sun, though some might extend into the sun on very busy days (hence the "Unless you go on one of the busiest days") preface.

I most definitely found it much harder to avoid the sun when walking around the parks than when standing in line.

Perhaps I'm reading tone that is not there, but it seems really condescending to say I should be more concerned about the sun walking around the park. I am aware of how the outdoors work. The thing is, I'm not asking for opinions. Nor did I ask what precautions I should take. The only thing I asked was who I needed to speak with and what information I needed to provide. Again, I am only needing an alternate place to sit for the lines that are not adequately shaded, and while this will not be an issue for most lines, it will be at some. But I really shouldn't have to explain my disability to anyone on an online forum, right?

Information about the DAS is available in the first post of the WDW- Disability Access Service Card thread pinned near the top of this forum. None of us can say whether Disney will issue one to you, as it is widely recognized that there is much more sun exposure around the parks than in lines, hence the other suggestions for protection.

Enjoy your vacation!

I think you are reading tone that isn't there. People are really trying to help. You need to read the thread explaining the DAS to help answer your question. It's at the top of the page.

No one asked you to explain your disability. Not a single person.

But it IS an online forum. If you didn't want a little extra thrown into answers you could have found the answers in the sticky on this forum or elsewhere. You're being really defensive when people are just offering advice.

You could always plan to do indoor activities during the day and then at night enjoy the rides that may not have adequate coverage in their lines.

I've been trying to think, what lines are out in the sun? I can't think of any off the top of my head. Maybe the Aladdin spinny thing in Adventureland?

Honestly, the only rides I can think of that might have SOME sun would be Expedition Everest (but most, if not all is covered, and it doesn't stay outside for long), and Tower of Terror, which has a ton of trees that offer shade as well.

My mom takes a small umbrella everywhere in the park and has never had an issue. She is very thin skinned due to taking medication and burns quite easily.

I've been to WDW many times since my skin cancer diagnosis 9+ years ago, and we go in August.

August? Yes, August, because park hours are later into the night, and we plan a looong midday break back at the resort to be out of the sun.

Outside queues without protection - Tomorrowland Raceway has an open queue, but then again, the whole attraction is outside, so save it for evening. Magic Carpets of Aladdin (to a point, but there is a shade cover over most of it) part of Spacship Earth, and the waiting area for the Nemo show at AK - which has a lot more shade than it used to have. Parts of Splash are outside but very shady, as is Mine Train. The most difficult wait was for lunch at BoG one time, but now it can be FP+ with an onsite reservation. They also offered umbrellas for shade one time :)

Biggest pain was finding shade to wait for the afternoon parade. I rarely get to see the afternoon parades as it is too much sun. Second biggest pain is waiting for a bus at Pop Century if the queues are filling up - no shade over them. There are benches nearby under a cover, but not in the queue.

Walking down Main Street at MK - stay in the Emporium as long as possible. Walk on the shady side of paths. Go at rope drop, leave, come back at night. Save World Showcase for evenings. Use the Innovention buildings to get around Future World.
