The Spiediefest web site has this to say about Spiedies:

A Spiedie is a tasty treat
Of marinated meat
Cooked on a skewer
Charbroiled and fed
On a slice of Italian bread.

Seems spiedies have quite a history dating back to the Roman Empire. Check out the site for more info.
