Lunch @ AK w/ Peanut allergy

Hi all,

I am facing the challenge of finding a meal for DD while at AK for lunch, DD has a peanut allergy.
I notice a lot of AK food is chinese and she cannot have that b/c things may be cooked in peanut oil.
We have breakfast ADRs for Tusker House but where can we go for lunch?
WOuld it be wrong for DF and I to get food @ Flametree BBQ and something for her some place else?

Suggestions welcomed, I have the list and form from the food lady from epcot (I can't think of her name) that I have to send out as far as TS meals go.

Brenda is her name. From the various reports it is very possible to have a nut free meal at all AK restaurants but some people question Yak and Yeti because it is run by Landrys's which is not Disney.

the foremost thing is whether your daughter is touch sensitive, inhalation sensitive, or ingestion sensitive as well as has severe the reaction is. A person with inhalation may want to avoid some restaurants but a person with mild to moderate would not have a problem.

The chefs will make a special plate and will walk guests through buffet lines and the menus. Chekc FAQs for info.

It is past Selkat's bedtime and she knows a lot about peanut allergies and will help you out a lot. If your daughter is touch sensitive then you make sure you wipe down under and on top of tables and the chairs also. I read about a mom and she was setting up the table and her kid grabbed the table and got a reaction. Think of the worst parents you can possibly think of and how they leave tables sticky with ketchup and covered with bread crumbs. Now add their kids who put their peanut butter covered hands all over things. That is why my response depends on how sensitive a person is.

Getting info from Brenda Bennett in advance is a good idea (contact is in the FAQ at the top of this forum). Plus, you can go to the CS restaurants and ask to speak to a manager, who will be able to help you figure out safe things to eat. I will say that some of the CS places (like Flame Tree, Pizzafari, and Restaurantosaurus) may not use peanut products in anything (although depending on the severity of the allergy, it's good to inquire if they serve those uncrustable sandwiches).

We always go to Flametree for lunch or Pizzafari - for the quick serve. I haven't been to AK since Yak and Yeti opened so I know nothing about it.

What gives you pause about feeding her at Flametree? Is it that she doesn't like the food or is there something there that worries you about the peanut allergy? We dined there last March (2008) and I don't remember any major concerns in their menu.

I think Flametree's menu sounds better than it tastes and if it is a crowded time of year or the hot summer months - eating outside wasn't so much fun. I think I like Pizzafari for the all of the indoor space (it is rather big inside). Of course that has nothing to do with the menu.

There is no rule about buying food in one QS place and eating it at another that I know of - her food might get cold while you get from one place to another though!

My DS has a peanut allergy and we were told by his allergist and ped. that he can have food cooked in peanut oil b/c it is lacking the protein that is the true allergen that the peanut contains. You may want to check, but my DS has never had problems with peanut oil.

Pizzafari might be an option. The meals there are pizza or spaghetti. They are really accommodating. I normally get spaghetti and they leave the cheese off for me.

My DD has a life threatening peanut allergy and we ate at Pizzafari. She was fine with the pizza there and really enjoyed it. We were on the DDP and the only dessert that was safe for her was the frozen lemonade.

Yak and Yeti and the Y&Y counter service was not an option for us not because of peanut oil but because they had items with a peanut sauce. I would stay away from here because of it.

You can definately find options here if you look and use the binders at each of the CS locations that list the ingredients. I always talk with a manager anyway in addition and feel better about it.

Yes, you can definitely buy from more than one CS place and eat together at one CS place. I can't eat anything that Flame Tree BBQ has, so I ate at Pizzafari. My friend couldn't eat pizza (on a restricted diet by a doctor for health reasons), so she got a salad from Flame Tree and met me at Pizzafari. (She hated the salad, BTW - they used BBQ sauce as the salad dressing and the chicken in it was thin lunch meat, not the usual thick slices of chicken!)

When we had a group lunch meet at Flame Tree later in the week, I was planning on bringing over Pizzafari food for myself, but I ended up not being able to eat yet at that time, so I didn't eat anything.

Thank you everyone, I think I may get ours from FTBBQ and get DD spaghetti from pizzafari....how I just have to see where both of those are on my map haha.

I thought that FTBBQ may have some Asian food? And I really don't think anything would be too appealing to her off that menu.

Her peanut allergy stresses me out! Really didn't care for her allergist he seemed very relaxed about her allergy and when I asked him Qs he would say every child is different, it depends on the child, etc. She had PB for the 1st time when she was almost 3 and she got the littlest bit on her tongue and scrapped it off with her hand and then she broke out in all hives and complained of her ears....not sure if she swallowed anything. We gave her benadryl and she was ok, but ped gave us the epi and we went to the allergist. When he did the skin test it blew up immediately. So, I don't really know if she is touch sensitive bc that was her first experience with it, and I know she is ok inhaling b/c she sits by my mom when she has it. I just keep her away from the stuff haha, my home is nut free.

Flame tree is just a BBQ place as I recall - not really an asian influence there. People rave about the BBQ but it didn't impress me all that much.

My son got his allergy when he was 27 months old and had a full body reaction to the point that we called 911. It is a stressful allergy but after awhile you get better at dealing with it. The peanut allergy website helped a lot - http://www.peanutallergy.com There are discussion boards there and many discuss WDW on the travel board there.

The spaghetti at Pizzafari seems like a good option to check ingredients on. The pizza has a whole grain crust now that included sunflower seeds which are a cross contam issue if there is a severe nut allergy. They may have changed it but definitely look at ingredients on any of the pizzas.

Thanks for the heads up on the crusts - I haven't gotten allergen info for the AK in about a year and things do change. It is always important to get the latest info before you go from WDW itself.

I was wondering what their is to eat at AKL, our 9 y/o DS has a severe peanut allergy and we are thinking of staying there on the dining plan but I worry about the options for him there. We just went in OCt and everyone was wonderful from the waitresses, waiters, chefs, reservation staff but they did tell us over the phone to stay away from AKL restaurant Boma. Does anyone have any insight??

In May '07 I took DS (then age 11) - severe peanut allergy - to Disney for first time. The whole extended family went...main purpose to see my nephew march with HS band at MK. I was nervous but friends with food-allergic kids assured me all would be OK. And - we fell in LOVE with all things Disney on that trip! Now, this was a couple of years ago...but my friends (with two daughters, allergic to peanuts and tree nuts) ate at Boma and RAVED about it. Pretty much said it was their best experience and best meal. The chef told them exactly what they could and could not order, and - when there was not a dessert that was "safe" - specially made the girls deep-fried Oreos which they are still talking about!

Have you read "Passporter's Walt Disney World for your Special Needs" book? Again, my copy is a couple of years old, but it says of Boma: "...a kitchen staff that goes out of its way to be accomodating." If you really want to eat there, don't just rely on the word of one reservationist. Get the phone number for the restaurant and call them ahead of time (they gave me the number for Chef Mickey's!)

Of course, always state your peanut allergy when making your TS reservations...and again when you sit down at the table. I was so impressed that we met every chef, everywhere we went, table service and counter service. Whether we ordered fettucine alfredo or chicken nuggets, we met the person who cooked it...and they often delivered DS' meal to us themselves.

Side note: A friend who recently visited said pizza at the new Epcot Italian eatery, Tutto Italia, is NOT peanut-free (they use peanut oil AND there is cross-contamination from where they roll dough). Family almost didn't ask - thinking "Pizza is pizza, it's OK" - but luckily checked.

I'm almost 100% sure this was Chef TJ that served your friends at Boma and he is no longer there - he has moved to O'Hana's last I know. He also made us the deep fried Oreos - boy was that a dessert! LOL!

I don't know how great Boma is without Chef TJ there but I know O'Hana's must be wonderful. I plan to try to track him down and have dinner at O'Hana's this summer if he is still there.

We stay at AKL and I have had very good experiences there. I didn't eat at Boma because of the nut issue but if your son would be happy with the kids food served on the menu they can definitely make him a plate from the kitchen. They will get something at any WDW owned TS place that he can safely eat but he may not have many choices--they will all have things like grilled chicken, fish, or steak. We ate a good bit at the CS place called Mara. They were great about getting me what I needed in terms of breakfast and a lunch. They did carry a number of the allergy safe snacks called Divvies and some of the brands of cookies and pretzels that didn't carry nut warnings. Menus do change though so calling ahead is a good idea. I noticed that Mara is now serving falafel which won't work for me in terms of legume allergy and is frequently fried in peanut oil so hopefully they use a dedicated fryer for that.

Thank you for informing me about Italy!! We aren't eating there but I really thought about it because like you said....pizza is pizza right? But I guess not. Makes me realize EVERYTHING has to be questioned. Thanks a lot!
