Lunar eclipse Sat, photo tips article

With 8MP a 200mm lens is not bad for photographing the moon. It still takes a fair amount of cropping but you should get a lot of detail.

I'm hoping for good weather that evening, maybe this time I can get some images of the eclipsed moon rising over a nearby lake.

they're calling for cloudy and snow here...something different than the 10 days a yrs it's not cloudy in NE Ohio:lmao: the lake is a good idea though.. if there is any chance of seeing it i might head to the "north coast" and see if lake Erie is frozen or not

Thanks for the info!! I've always wanted to do some astrophotography, just need to spend more money and get a telescope......:confused3

Looks like the lunar eclipse in August will be better for us westerners!

The way I read it, he is talking 300mm in SLR terms, not in that you need a 300mm lens. With your 1.6x crop factor, you will have over 300mm on a 70-200mm lens. I have taken a few decent ones of the moon with my 80-210mm and it is a cheapo lens that is not very sharp.

duh for me...but great as well!

Excellent,,, we're supposed to have some decent weather on Sat and being at 7pm ish I'll definately try to remember to get the camera out and get some pics. I'll try to pay attention the next few nights to where the moon is around that time so I know where to set up. Hopefully not to low in the sky because there are a lot of tall trees around out house.

Unfortunately (in some cases anyway) a 200 is still a 200. While a crop camera has the field of view of a longer lens it does not have the magnification of one. The image on the sensor will be the same size whether it is on a Rebel, 5D, 1D, or 1Ds.

200mm is still not bad for moon photos and with more pixels we can crop more and still get a decent image.
