I am really interested in small and light so the micro 4/3 hype got my attention. After Panasonic's advertising ("greatly reduces camera size and weight" and "Weighing about half as much as a standard digital single-lens reflex (DSLR) camera (1.28 lbs)") I still don’t get the great advancement offered by micro 4/3. Perhaps another new camera will deliver the goods but the G1 is not it .
Here is a quick comparison between the G1 and Canon's Xs, both with their kit lenses:
Xs
1 lb 9 oz
$513
4.96 x 3.8 x 2.4
G1
1 lb 5 oz
$800 (msrp)
4.88 x 3.29 x 1.78
So the G1 is 4 ounces lighter, 1/2 inch less tall, and 5/8 inch less depth. The Xs is selling for about $100 off msrp so that puts the G1 at about $700.
I had really hoped for a breakthrough in an SLR-like camera but saving 4 ounces is not enough to make me switch systems, especially when I have to give up the optical viewfinder and a great selection of lenses, not to mention a couple hundred more $$$.
I hope the next micro 4/3 announcement is better, this one is a disappointment.
