It has been almost two years since I traveled by plane. I was told that all luggage that is checked in must be unlocked. Is this true?

Yes, security has the right to search it. If they search it they leave a note in your bag telling you they did. :)

If you have it locked and they need to get in your suitcase they will cut the lock. They may also damage the suitcase in the process. If you want to keep it closed you can use one of the plastic cable ties.

You can now buy TSA-approved looks. I got mine at Target for about 5 bucks. If they need to get into your luggage, the have a key of some sort that will unlock it without having to cut it. Just make sure the lock says TSA approved and you should be fine.

Does security take the time to lock the TSA approved lock after they have searched? I just say secure it and let it go because they are going into your bag anyway. Keep your valuables and an emergency set of clothing in your carry on. A friend of mine works for security at Newark Airport here in NJ and he said that your one bag can be checked by three different officers.
