So, i'm shopping for new luggage. Primarily I need at least one bag that will hold 50 pounds (but 2 would be preferable). Anyone know about what size bag would hold 50 pounds? This is my first time buying real/adult luggage so I'm unclear about it all.

I'm not an expert on luggage but 50 pounds seems to be an odd requirement. 50 pounds of lead? 50 pounds of feathers? 50 pounds of jeans or 50 pounds of shorts and silk shirts? Weight and amount of space taken are often different.

When I was shopping for luggage recently I went to a few stores and tried to picture what I'd pack in each case. I did a quick estimate about how many pairs of pants, shirts etc I could fit in a piece and took a deep breath and bought what I thought would work. I'll find out for sure if I guessed right in September when I pack for my tip.

Good luck on your luggage hunt.

Makes sense, though I figured if I were packing things other than clothes, I would've said box or something. I'm looking for a way to check two bags of clothes (50 pounds each) on an airplane.

50 lbs. is the wieght limit most airlines put on luggage these days.

We have a 26" pullman style bag that is a Samsonite which, if oyu pack it heavy, goes over 50lbs.

You would probably be best to keep the size of the bag to 24" or less, because it's harder to get the weight up to 50lbs. in a smaller bag.

OMG...OP, I thought your thread said LANGUAGE and that you were shopping for a new language....ugh....a late night and an even earlier morning....

ANYWAY: LL BEAN has a catalog called TRAVELER..it is fabulous and they have brand new state of the art luggage and it is not overly priced at all.

It is called BEAN's QUICKLOAD COLLECTION. The prices are as follows:
Medium (2-3days)$99.00 and then Ex-Large (4-7days)$129.00. They have a carry on as well. Go on their site and see if they are on the BEAN site or call them to mail you a TRAVELER catalog. The whole catalog is fabulous.

The key is to buy lightweight but sturdy luggage. A lot of it depends on how much you plan on traveling. You can buy the JC Penney brand if you don't plan on traveling much--it's actually pretty decent luggage, and often on sale 25-50% off.

If you plan on traveling more often, the Samsonite or American Tourister is a good idea, although some of that can be expensive and not hold up any better than lower cost luggage.

I use mostly Tumi, it's very expensive and generally not worth the cost for someone who will only use it once or twice a year. It's ultra lightweight. Also TravelPro, which is what airlines issue to their employees, which is also great luggage.

Remember, the 50 pounds includes the suitcase, although to be honest, 50 pounds is a LOT of stuff. Out of curiosity I weighed my bag before I traveled last weekend, and with clothes/toiletries for four days plus a laptop, it was only 22 pounds, including the suitcase.

I won't need it to carry 50 pounds often - just to move me across the country via plane.
