Anyone know if there are weight limits on checked baggage??? We are planning on flying with 2 small children, car-seats and all, and I'd like to keep thh bags to a minimum (i.e. 1 for me and DW and 1 for the kids) with a backpack/diaper bag for me and DW as carry-ons. I have a friend who was charged extra $$ for his bag being over 50 lbs. and I'm thinking depending on how much stuff my DW plans on shoving into the suitcase, there's a good chance I'll be over the limit...anyone know if there's a limit and what it is???

It depends on what airline you are using. Airtran allows 3 bags per person weighing 70lbs each. I've heard other airlines allow up to 50lbs.

Check your airline's website. USAirways is still 70 lbs per bag. You can check 2 bags per person, so you might be better off taking an extra bag to spread it out. Rent a luggage cart when you get to baggage claim, it's $3.

I think SWA is also 70 lbs. We have a suitcase that is the largest dimension suitcase that you can check without an additional charge. On our way home, it was packed full and it was over the 70 lbs by a couple of lbs. They were not thrilled about it but they warned me and didn't charge me the $35 fee. Very nice of them! As long as you are packing "normal" items in a "normal" suitcase, then you most likely will not be over the weight limit. I was only over because I used up every last millimeter of space in the largest suitcase possible!

ToyStory Fan, check with your airline. Every airline has a free baggage allowance which details how much you can carry in the cabin and in the cargo hold. There is usually much variation in what airlines will allow because it depends on the distance of flight, number of passengers boarded, kind of aircraft it is, other cargo being carried, weather conditions, airport taxi duration, etc., etc., etc.

And yes, there is a fee for excess weight AND excess dimensions. How big and how heavy and how many will determine how much more you will pay. My airline allows 3 bags per customer, in any combination of checked and unchecked, to a maximum per customer of 140 lbs domestic and 70 pounds international.

So check with your airline about their FBA (free baggage allowance) and the excess charges that might apply...

:)

Thanks everyone...I'll check with JetBlue and see what the limit is. As far as the extra bag goes it'll be tough even with the luggage cart because we'll have 2 kids, 2 car seats, 2 bags and 2 strollers. The car seats will be coming with us on the plane, and we'll probably gate check the strollers or if possible give them to the flight attendants to hold in the "closet" up front. We'll see how that goes.

They will gate check the strollers, they will not closet them.
Looks like you will need two luggage carts.
