Where can I find out how much checked baggage I can have. Is it a certain number of pieces or pounds?

Thanks
Jodi

Most US domestic airlines are 2 checked bags per person weighing no more than 50 lbs each. They recently changed from 70 lbs to 50.

It's both pieces and pounds. Check your carriers web site, the rules vary pretty widely from carrier to carrier!

Good advice Anne, and they do vary. SWA is 70# and I think Delta is 50#.

I believe usair is 70lbs - at least it was about 2 weeks ago when i checked the website

We are going on Air Tran. I checked their site a few days ago and they said 70#. Yeah!

It is not just weight, it is also dimensions.

Thanks for the replies. I plan on taking one carry on and possibly two checked suitcases. My dh will have one checked luggage (no carry on), and my 2 girls will each have one carry one and one checked luggage. I want two pieces of luggage so I have an extra to bring home souvenirs. Does that sound ok? Or does that also vary by airline? As you can tell, I have never flown.

I would call your airline about two weeks before you go to confirm what the current rules are. We got stuck when the limit changed while we were traveling. When I ponted out that I had one bag for all five of us, they quickly changed their mind about charging me the money for an "overweight" bag.

Jodi, I am not sure who you are flying, but, go to their website and they will list what you can have for baggage. Carry ons are under sort of strict guidelines for size.

Be sure that your suitcases are not oversized or overweight. If they are they charge by the segment and that can get expensive if you have connecting flights.

I am not sure if I could get 70 pounds in one suitcase on the way there. I know for a fact I can on the way home. :D
