Luggage on flight (Alaska Air)

I do not have any experience with these suitcases but here is my two cents. Your personal item is supposed to go under your seat and is usually a purse/backpack/ laptop bag, something that you can have on your body, and easily access the contents of.These essentially look like two suitcases though, which wouldn't be fun to lug around in the airport or on the plane. Because it is a hard case you can't even try to "squish" it under the seat. I personally wouldn't purchase this just because I can't see it making travel easier, but rather harder. The larger of the two though would work fine for carry on and stored up top.

I don't fly Alaska (Southwest person myself), but that looks like it should fit under the seat. It looks like Alaska unfortunately does not release the exact dimensions of the under seat storage like some airlines do.

However, that bags dimensions are 18"H x 13"W x 7.6"D. Someone estimates the following for Alaska: aim for less than 11" tall by 17" wide by 18"-20" long. So it would fit if put in correctly and assuming those rough measurements are correct.

I travel with under seat bags on Southwest that are around this size, but I can tell you that bag is not going to be easy access. If I use an under seat, I like to make sure I can access things without having to take the bag out from under the seat.

I wouldn't try to stuff the smaller suitcase under the seat. I would just check the larger suitcase and put the smaller one in the overhead bins.

I think I'll just pass on buying them. I am such a sucker for new luggage and Disney stuff. I don't get into my under seat bag normally during the flight but don't want to risk having to check a bag. I hate checking bags.

I fly alaska often but only fly with my carry on. Both DD and I have a 20 inch Disney luggage and I cant see an 18 in fitting under the seat. Do you always fly with two suitcases? I ask because the smaller one might be a good carry on for quick trips or for a child.

It's totally bizarre, but Alaska Airlines doesn't say anything about what size a "personal item" would be. A typical limit would be like United's 17x10x9" or American's 18x14x8". As long as it fits under the seat I'd think you'd be fine. I don't think they really care if it sticks out (where it would cut into your legroom), but it's got to be thin enough to slide in.

My son got the Star Wars set for Christmas and we just flew 2 weeks ago on Delta. The bigger one went overhead and he had no problem fitting the smaller under the seat.
He also had zero issues handling them through the airports. He fully extended the handle on the bigger one, set the smaller one on top and extended that handle to meet the other and just wheeled it in front of him.

Thank you so much for letting me know!

We have these luggage sets and flew with them on Alaska Air December 2019. We checked the large bag and carried the smaller one on and put it in the overhead bin. Not sure if they would fit under the seat but they definitely let you carry the smaller ones on.

I saw these in Costco and they are quite small. The littler one is kid sized and I think it would fit under a seat.

I don't believe that's the OP's concern. Both pieces are obviously smaller than the designated carry-on size, which is actually smaller now than Alaska's previous 24" max length. I believe the idea is to use the larger piece as the designated carry-on piece, and the smaller one as the designated personal item. This wouldn't require paying a baggage fee.

Worst case scenario would be that they would ask the passenger to gate check one of the pieces if the smaller one doesn't qualify as a "personal item".

I'd actually call up Alaska Airlines baggage service (1-877-815-8253) to be clear on this.

The problem with putting a hardside case under the seat is that some planes have a power pack (metal box) under the seats that reduces the height of the under-seat area. They are common on the aisle seats of a lot of planes, but some planes have them under all the seats (and some, none!).
