If feel very inadequate. I am at Disney with a netbook not my laptop. Doing pictures in an 8" is just not what I am used to.

Here are two shots from MNSSHP. The first of the season.

I caught someone's flash in one obviously and the other was with available light. Very hard to manual focus in this light.

How cool! I didn't get one picture of the headless horseman, it came around too fast and I wasn't ready :(

Such a tough shot to get! I'd say you did a great job with it. Hope you're having a great time. I'd love to get to MNNSHP some day!

Cool- my one and only time there was almost a complete bust for pictures.

Here is the only shot I could get out last year while at the MNSSHP... I will be leaving for WDW in 7 days, and will be trying this party again, so we will see what happens... My camera doesn't do the greatest night shots, and I can't figure out how to get rid of the noise, but here it is...

Great job! Oh, how I miss MNSSHP! That Headless Horseman goes by so fast!

Happy Halloween (early)! Here are a couple pictures I took last year:

Great shots. I was trying to get with natural light not flash. I was using a manual focus 50mm 1.2. Just hard to get focus in such low light.

See? Just when you decide to be responsible and sell a lens you rarely use---it comes back to bite you in the rear.

So what have we learned, class? Buy more, sell less. :hyper: C'mon John, if anyone should know this by now it's you!! ;)

I'm planning on bringing my 30mm f/1.4 this trip. What ISO did you use? I doubt I'll be able to get it without a flash- my XSi only has 1600ISO.

I, too, normally like to take pictures in natural light. But that particular area in front of the castle had no spotlights, so it was very very dark. Plus, the horse was very dark as well. So trying to take this photo without flash would have been very hard, even with the best of lenses / full frame / high ISO / etc, as you found out.

That's why I figured I'd use just a little bit of flash to help out. :)

Your pics are amazing!! Holy smokes! What lens were you shooting with??

A stationary subject in the dark can be a challenge to capture hand-held with natural light. A fast-moving subject under the same conditions is many times more difficult, even with a wide aperture.

And speaking of wide apertures, remember the trade-off of more light is shallower depth of field. At apertures as large as 1.2 to 2.8 you may be talking about an inch or less that's in focus. Maintaining focus on moving subjects with such shallow depth of field can be tough.

Ann & Grill, I knew exactly what I was doing! That was part of the dub to be at right spot And get the shot. I know it is a great balance of luck and skill!
So why not shoot for the moon figuratively speaking.
I am typing this from my iPhone in the Orlando airpot so forgive errors!!!

So IS there a prevailing opinion on what settings to use, where to sit, etc. to have the best "shot" at this???

Coming home already?! :headache: Hope you had a great trip.

I think you did a fantastic job with the shot. I was merely implying that had you not sold your autofocusing 50mm f/1.8 for another few weeks, maybe it could have been better---hence the reason we should hold onto every piece of gear we ever acquire! ;)
