Do any of you all-knowing Disers know of any herbal meds/natural techniques that can be used to lower one's pulse rate? A friend of mine found out that her pulse is a bit high, nd she is looking for natural/herbal remedies that might help (she's also going to her Dr.)

I couldn't think of anything, so I said I would ask all of you. Any ideas/advice would be greatly appreciated :)

TIA

Does your friend exercise? To get a lower resting heart rate, one should do cardiovascular exercise.
I don' t know of any herbs to do that.

only exercise as far as i know. I have a son who is a distance runner. He has a super low pulse rate. Is her blood pressure high also. Because for that there probably are herbal treatments.

She didn't mention that her BP was high, so I'm going to guess it's ok....

And, I hate to ask a stupid question, but what type of execises are cardiovascular? TIA!!!!

definitely exercise. even a little bit makes a big difference in mine. ::yes:: ::yes:: ::yes::

running, walking, swimming, would all help. :)

Thanks caitycaity.

BTW, I lovw the pic in your sig. I hope to get some great Eifel Tower pics when I go to Paris in Jan :)

There are 3 categories of exercises: cardiovascular, strength-building, and flexibility.

Cardiovascular exercise is also known as aerobic exercise. Aerobic exercise uses your large muscles and can be continued for long periods. For example, walking, jogging, swimming, and cycling are aerobic activities. These types of exercises drive your body to use oxygen more efficiently and deliver maximum benefits to your heart, lungs, and circulatory system.

Strength-building and flexibility exercises are known as anaerobic exercise. Anaerobic exercise does not have cardiovascular benefits, but it makes your muscles and bones stronger. Strength-building exercises require short, intense effort. Flexibility exercises, which are also anaerobic, tone your muscles through stretching and can prevent muscle and joint problems later in life.

A simple definition of cardiovascular exercise is any exercise that raises your heart rate to a level where you can still talk, but you start to sweat a little. 20 or more minutes of a cardiovascular exercise 3x week is usually needed to get cardiovascular benefits.

There are certain types of blood pressure medicines that will lower the heart rate also. I took one which lowered my heart rate to in the 40s  But mine is normally in high 50s /low 60s on average anyway..

Other interesting facts
Fish lowers heart rate -- http://www.thestressoflife.com/fish_lowers_heart_rate.htm

There are herbal medicines you could take but I would not suggest it without talking to herbalist or doctor. They could be dangerous.

For myself, I notice when I stick to my Atkins diet, my pulse is a lot lower than usual, maybe low 60's verus low 70's. Just one more sign IMHO that sugar (carbs) are not good for me.

Some people just have a naturally high base heart rate. She may not be able to change it.
