Lower price vs. 12 extra years

We are about to buy into DVC. We stayed at BWV last year and really loved it, hence the reason to buy in. I have followed this forum for the last few weeks and everyones answer is the same " buy where you want to stay". But has any one considered the diference between buying resale at say BWV at $71.00 per point vs. the extra 12 years at SS. A quick cost per year gives a lower cost per year at SS and those extra 12 years look real good if we were ever going to resale. but I just can't see us staying at SS while the kids are young 5-10 more years. The seven month window wouldn't bother us, we travel mostly off season.
Thanks

There are many variables. The RTU of the older DVC resorts of 38 years will not affect most people currently buying. I'd still buy where you want to stay. If you were say only 21 or so, that might be different, you might get use out of the extra years. I just bought (and now sold) a RTU with only 29 years left. I didn't buy with the intention of reselling, the opportunity just came up so I took it. If pice is the issue, OKW might be the best choice. Still, the extra time isn't worth the risk and hassle if you plan to stay at other DVC resorts for some time to come.

JakelBread,

What good is 12 extra years if you don't like the resort as much?

And please be careful when treating a DVC purchase as a resellable commodity. There's never been guarantee, short- or long-term, that the price will stay up; and with the whole Comcast issue, there's even less certainty.

I still agree with "buy where you want to stay" - there's a reason why so many of us say it....

Great advice. Where do you really want to stay, especially during peak times and holidays. That's where you want the homer resort advantage. There has been discussion, although pure speculation and guessing, that there may be extensions for current DVC resorts offerred. No one knows. You can look at the ages of the contemporary and poly and see if you think they will be dozing them down and completely rebuilding as some have conjectured may happen to DVC resorts. Besides, who knows if any of us will live that long. Don't get me wrong, the length of the contract is an important factor, just not the only factor. Which resort do you like the best?
