Low light

DBF and I bought a Canon SD630 tonight. We did a lot of research and it seemed to get good reviews, we tried it in the store and it seemed great. We got home to try it out and the LCD screen was horribly grainy, although the couple pictures we took came out fine.

We drove back to the store and took another look at the display model and ours looked nothing like it. So we brought the camera back in and were told that low light conditions will cause the LCD to be grainy or blurry but that the pictures will not be affected. Of course it worked fine in the store.

They also told us that the air conditioning can affect the LCD, something about the moisture in the air?

I've never noticed this before with my other digital cameras, but they also have much smaller LCDs so maybe I just couldn't tell.

Is this a normal problem?

hmm just thought mine looked really weird a few nights ago( like it was speckled) but i thought maybe i just glanced at it from a weird angle..course it has either been hotter than blazes( so in a/c before hand) or pouring rain so now i 'm wondering too

Do you have the same camera? Or did you notice this on a different model?

I'd try this: take your camera back to the store where it was purchased, and ask for a camera department *manager*. Take a few pix with both cameras, using identical settings (ISO, etc.) of the same subject, under the same lighting conditions, and compare the results. If you are still unhappy with the results, ask for an exchange or refund.

BTW, my experience has been that the image on the LCD of my Fuji is not NEARLY as sharp and bright as the image actually turns out. In my case, it is useful only to see if the picture is there and if it is framed correctly. Otherwise, I have to wait until I can d/l the pix and look at them on my computer monitor to see what I *really* have. I've taken quite a few shots that looked horrible on the LCD, only to find them to be really good on the computer monitor.

Hope that helps.

no mine is a canon rebel xt ...totally agree with yeckim about the pics looking better than the screen though. if you do take it to the store and it's a "normal " thing could you post the cause of it? Thanks

Well, the tech people at the store told me "low light" or my air conditioner. I emailed and called Canon and they told me they had never heard of the air conditioner thing, but that low light is a common cause of graininess on LCD screens. The man I talked to on the phone also said he notices some interference on his camera depending on what other electronic devices he's around -- for example, he said his gets worse if he's in the kitchen and the microwave's on.

Thanks for the info..must have been the low light...so problems with lcd in low light or too much light...touchy little screen now isn't it...and i'll make sure notto expect to get a good representation on the lcd if i decide to take any picts of my lean cusine when it's in the micro :rotfl:
