Low impulse control and verandahs on cruise

Hi all- I have a son with poor impulse control and will sometimes act without thinking. We are considering a cruise and I was wondering how easily someone could fall off a verandah! What type of cabin would you recommend?

We cruise on Princess but all deck railing is the same it's 4' so if the child is a climber standing on a chair or table would let you fall over. Another indicator would be if he can jump a fence without climbing it then he could go over the rails.

Hi -- If you think your child might climb or lean over the railing better to pay less and have a safe room! We love the verandah but not worth a safety concern.

You can lock the sliding glass door but if you have any concern you wouldn't sleep well I'd imagine. You could get a room with a port hole or an inside stateroom then head to the decks when directly supervised for a view!

Only you know your child and If you think me might -- better not have that balcony!

I just remembered a trip to Hilton Head
The folks next door had a climber ! (All HH rooms are on the 2nd floor or higher due to local ordinance for hurricaines.)

Anyway the family was constantly moving furniture away from the porch railings and this little guy was dragging it back to climb. The parents were constantly telling him no -- and we weren't enjoying listening to it and they certainly were getting tired of keeping him safe!

Again you know your child but if he might climb I 'd advise not to have the balcony!

Our daughter is autistic and extremely impulsive. At this point a balcony stateroom is out of the question, although I think I would need an oceanview room because I am claustrophic.

I too have a child with low to no impulse control and at this point would not even think of having a cabin with a balcony. I would rather have just a window. Why take the risk of him climbing, when you are in your cabin you should be able to relax, and if you have to worry about your child it would be impossible. I also got (at the dollar store) a few packages of those window/door alarms. The ones that have the horrible shrill. I bring them with me when we go to motels and the like and place them on windows and doors so that if we are sleeping nd she decides to open the door/ window the alarm will go off. The alarms are reusable all you need is more double sided tape (also at the dollar store)!

On the Disney ships, after you lock the door, there is a second lock that you need to twist that is located about 5 feet high on the door. So, the child would need to climb on the sofa or drag the coffee table over, climb up to twist that knob in the correct direction, then climb down and swivel the door handle downwards then pull the sliding door open. That would get him access to the verandah.

Once on the verandah, he would need to drag the deck chair over to the verandah railing, the climb up and onto/over the railing.
