Lover

EWWW! The word just is skeevy to me.

I don't like Will Farrell and I absolutely loathe those skits. They make my skin crawl and I feel the need to shower after seeing them.

UGH!!!

I have to go shower now!!!:rotfl2:

It's one of those words I hate...makes my skin crawl...in any context!

Trashy and smarmy!

Agreed. My sister used to call her former boyfriend "lover" and it made me cringe every single time. :headache: "What did you say, lover?" "Lover, can you get me a soda, please?" Etc...Blech

I almost don't mind it when it's used as a pet name/term of endearment. I'm not crazy about it but can almost see it. What I don't like, I guess, is the public use of it to designate your partner.

Oh, hi John, how are you? Meet Debbie, she's my lover.

Just weird.

another good use of the word "lover!" Great song!!
I think 'lover' can be a really sexy word and some of you people seem really uptight in this conversation.:coffee: This IS, of course, IMHO!

I am about the least uptight person in the world and I don't like the word lover. My husband is my husband. It should be quite obvious he's my lover.

I don't like people who excessively display their affection in public. I think it's over the over the top. We get that you love each other, thanks for the show.

I still say that skit on SNL is just gross. If that makes me uptight, so be it.

It's just not my personality to use that word. I don't think I could use it without laughing. Not that there is anything wrong with using that word. Just not for me.

There was a time, from about the mid-1970's until the late 1980's, when the some folks in the LGBT community had a political thing for using the word "lover" -- it was connected to the pride movement. They wanted to make it clear that the person they were with was not simply a "friend", because they felt that was closeting by omission. That POV has largely fallen by the wayside now, but perhaps Maher was caught in a bit of a time warp.

Personally, when it comes to this word and SNL, what comes to my mind is Mike Myers as Dieter from "Schpro-kets" (over the top German accent implied ;))

I really like the word 'lover' in certain context. I've called my husband 'lovah' more than a few times for emphasis. I really liked the use of the word when Carrie Bradshaw used it in 'SATC', and she said,"lovah." One of my girlfriends uses it with the rest of us when she smooches us hello and I LOVE it! In the context of "John Edwards' lover is going to be on The View today; not so much.

So you only like it when prounounced with a New England accent? :confused3

I agree with those who say it seems to insinuate a one-dimensional, physical relationship. The irony though, is that it really should conjure up the exact oppostite image, since it's from the verb "to love".

My fiance always says "Hello lover and friend" when I answer the phone and it always makes me laugh because of how he says it. Being used in a serious way would be unappealing to me, but I'm not generally a fan of any pet names (babe, baby, honey, etc.).
