Hi all!

We just got back this evening from our first trip to Universal. I had cancelled the WDW part of this trip before we left, and added one more day to our Universal reservations. I wanted to give Universal a real chance and not short change it or half do Disney, either.

We checked into RPR around noon on Sunday after a Priceline night at the Peabody, and we were having such a great time by Wednesday night that I added an *extra* night on letting us check out today. :goodvibes

I love Universal Studios- just love it.

I like IOA very much, but the Studios are more my speed. My children made me ride in the front of dueling dragons, until I had almost lost my voice from screaming by Monday night. I still sound a bit like Marge Simpson. ;)

Mythos was very good. We ate there twice. Finnigans and Lombard's Landing were good as well.

My kids liked the pool at Hard Rock, but preferred RPR pool for the pick-up pool volleyball games. I walked to Hard Rock from the Studios, and found it to be a fairly easy walk.

The walk to IOA from the RPR was quick and easy. We had room 1649, and we could take the stairs down to the path for a bit of a short cut. We were originally assigned a room in tower 2 on the third floor. Having left my dog at a kennel and quitting my smoking habit last year, I wanted to be in tower 1 away from both. Since I didn't mind at all waiting until 4 o'clock for our room, my request was granted.

I think in square footage our room was a bit smaller than those at Wilderness Lodge. It felt about a third larger however, even though there was no balcony. The decor was very nice, and things were set up to maximize the available space.

The parks are plenty big enough and small enough at the same time. I went to the Studios by myself one evening, while DH and the kids swam at Hard Rock. Another day DH went to the gym (he enjoyed the sauna) and had a lazy day at the resort, while the boys and I went to IOA. It was no big deal, because I didn't feel that we were all that far apart. The distances were not overwhelming, even for a complete newbie.

We didn't get bored once, although we were there from Sunday till today (Friday). The different attendants can put their own spin on a ride (Jaws, the Shrek preshow, even Jimmy Nuetron) in such a way that it just doesn't get old. They seem to be part of the attraction themselves, rather than simply directors of traffic.

I'll admit that on Sunday and even Monday, I was missing the comfort of knowing my way around WDW almost like the back of my hand. It is unsettling for me to be in a totally foreign environment. By Tuesday, though, I had the hang of things at Universal, and I was having a blast!

If I had treated Universal as a day trip, then I know I wouldn't have loved it like I do. My whole family had a fantastic vacation, and we look forward to going back. Thanks to all who helped with their advice, tips, and info! :thumbsup2

I'm so glad you had a great trip! I'm going in June, staying at RPR for the first time ( have stayed at HRH on my other trips). Its hard to explain to people why this vacation is so great, so relaxing and so fun. I cant wait til June!

welcome to the dark side.... :darth: it's good to see another family realizes Universal is a destination, rather than a distraction from WDW.

Wow, it sounds like you guys had a GREAT time! We are really missing US/IOA and tried to swing a trip down after Spring Break, seeing that we're going to be in SC for Spring Break, but it was not in the cards for us. Perhaps late August when we don't have to worry about our DDs missing any school. Glad that you had a nice trip.

Great to hear you had a wonderful vacation. I enjoyed reading your post. We, too, are taking our first Universal only trip after many times doing mostly Disney and hitting Universal just for a couple of days. I'm looking forward to staying at RPR and taking it slower. Many times I felt rushed to do the rides we liked best and move on rather than taking in all of Universal Studios and enjoying the atmosphere. I'm sure FOTL will make a HUGE difference in how we see the park. Since we are onsite the whole time, I look forward to the different dining opportunities that exist, as well.

Thank you so much for posting your experience...it's great to hear such wonderful reviews. I'm happy that you and your family had such a great time. We're heading to RPR in just under 3 weeks, our first night will be at the Peabody, thru Priceline as well. :teeth:

Hi all!

Alliecat, We really enjoyed the Peabody! It was beautiful, but not at all snooty or stuffy. We were checked in by a former WDW employee, who was super nice. Even though the kids can ride the trolley for free (I didn't know), she gave me 5 trolley tickets when I said it sounded like something me might want to do.
We had a fantastic room (1006) directly overlooking the pool area. The pool area is cool in that it is outside on the 3rd floor. Be warned though, it closes very early - at dusk. My boys got all ready to swim, and it was closed.
The beds were so comfy, and we thought the room was great. My younger son loved the little duck soaps. They were $12 in the hotel store four a pack of 4. So, I had DH ask the housekeeper out in the hall for a few, and she gave him $9 worth. :lmao:
The B-Line Diner was delicious. We had the big Asian Noodle bowl, Mushroom Pasta Carbonara with and without chicken, and a burger. The pastas were delicious, and the portions were huge. The best thing we had for breakfast was their little hot cakes made with sour cream and served with maple syrup. They melted in your mouth!
Now that I've rambled on and on without being asked a darned thing....I hope you and yours have a fantastic trip!! :teeth:

Thank you so much for the wonderful info!!! I really do appreciate it. We're really looking forward to the Peabody. :) I'm glad to hear that the B-Line Diner is delicious...we'll definitely dine there. The little hot cakes sound devine! Thank you for the tip about the pool, we'll probably take a swim so that's good info to know. Your comment about housekeeping giving your DH $9 worth of duck soaps made me laugh. :teeth:

I really appreciated your post! I am having some guilt over eliminating WDW completely from our next Orlando trip---But the deal for tickets for US/IOA was sooooo good I couldn't pass it up!
We travel so far to get to Orlando that we only go every 2 years or so. My kids are 5 & 9 now and I thought I'd get one more trip to WDW in (before my DD9 has to pay adult prices!!). But for only $199+tax we got 5 days for all 4 of us at US/IOA!! Imagine what we are saving...$600 maybe?
I suspect I will relate to your comment about knowing your way around WDW and having it take until the beginning of the 3rd day to feel comfortable with US/IOA...and that if you only had one day to see US you might not have had such a positive experience.
We are not leaving Disney completely out of our trip, however. We are wrapping it up with a 4-night DCL cruise!
Again thanks for some reassurance. I am feeling better about the decision and think we will have a great time too! :clown:

You're very welcome, AllieKat! I know I had trouble finding info on the Peabody, before I left. Have fun! :)

Stinasmom, I hope you enjoy Universal as much as we did. We are Seasonal Passholders at WDW, so we could have gone over there at any time if we ended up not liking Universal. We really loved it, though. Have a great trip! :sunny:

We are contemplating our first trip to Universal/IOA this June/July. I have absolutely NO IDEA what it is like there. I am afraid that it will be too much of a thrill ride park and my 13 and 9 yr. old girls are NOT thrill ride lovers. Would they like Universal/IOA or are there too many thrill rides and nothing else except "baby rides". I don't understand their fast pass system. Would we have problems if we stay at the Marriott World Center and not onsite?
Any and all info is greatly appreciated.

Hi Theresa! Being a Universal newbie myself I'll share my thoughts, but you may want to start another thread to get more input.

I think there is plenty to do, aside from the coasters. I see you've been to WDW, so I'll compare the two as best I can. I hope no one gets offended here... ;)

Popeye's Bilge Rat Barge is like Kali River Rapids
Shrek 4-D is like Honey, I Shrunk the Audience or Mickey's Philharmagic
Jaws is Jungle Cruise with LOTS of excitement...and a shark
Jimmy Neutron is kind of like Star Tours
Back to the Future is kind of like Star Tours, too
ET is like Peter Pan
MIB is like Buzz
Spiderman is like Star Tours on Steroids in 3-D (Very cool ride)
Dr. Doom is a toned down, reverse Tower of Terror
The Mummy is closest to Rockin' Rollercoaster, but has "frightening" mummy stuff
Twister is made to sound very frightening, but it's not. It's kind of like being outside in a FL thunderstorm. ;)
Earthquake is as the name suggests. I didn't think it was extra intense. You sit through an earthquake, basically.
Woody's Rollercoaster is a step under Goofy's Barnstormer as thrill rides go. I and my 9 and 11 yo boys rode it. Why not? :)
Flying Unicorn is a step up from Goofy's Barnstormer.
Fear Factor Live is a very good show, like the TV show but with theme park visitors. We watched twice. Don't volunteer for anything, just to be safe! :rotfl:
Horror makeup show is funny with very, very, little horror.
Poseidon's (sp) Revenge is good. It's kind of show, but I can't think of anything to compare it to. You stand like in the films they show at the Epcot countries. It's a "ride" though, and worth doing.
The Jurrasic Park River Adventure is kind of like Splash Mountain. It's a much larger car that you're seated in, and there are dinosaurs.
Cat in the Hat is like Pooh.
One Fish, Two Fish is like Alladin's Magic Carpet. (Or Dumbo with water)
They have a carousel. It goes round and round... :teeth:

They have the big coasters, of course. Dueling Dragons is scary as heck in the front row, but amazingly addictive. :rolleyes1 The Hulk is very good, but I always ended up with a headache. My head kept hitting the restraining bar. I quit riding it after 3 or 4 times. :rotfl2:

Anyway, we rode everything except a teacup-like ride near Hulk and the Pteranadon Flyers (long wait with no Express Line). That's all I can remember (maybe because I kept hitting my head on Hulk...)

Their fastpass has to be purchased. When I was there it was going for $20+ for one park/one day or 35+ for 2 parks/one day. With it you can get in the Express Line (fastpass line) 1 time per ride. If you want to ride again, then you have to wait in regular stand-by. They mark it, scan it, etc. to know you've ridden that ride. It costs different amounts at different times.

If you stay onsite, then you basically have a permanent fastpass via your keycard- but better. It's free with the room, and you can ride a ride repeatedly in the Express Line. Showing that card also got us seated immediately at Finnegan's during a 20-25 minute wait period.

I hope that helps! :sunny:

Theresa, I agree, you should start a new thread so you'll get more info, but these boards are SO full of information too, so spend the time reading them...it may be hard to have a clear image in your mind, since you haven't been there, but you will be well prepared! :thumbsup2

Someone posted a link on another thread that actually shows some of the attractions (I think as if you're ON them) :confused3 , I haven't visited it, but it sounds pretty cool! I'll try to find it and add it, unless someone else can post it. At Universal the two parks and CityWalk are all together within walking distance of eachother too...which makes park hopping very simple...and also offers additional entertainment/dining choices without having to go far! :thumbsup2

Hopefully nobody will jump on DanDave for the comparisons...I think I understand what he means when he says "is like" for each of them, but please keep in mind, most of the attractions at US/IOA are absolutely nothing like the things at WDW, specifically...but the list does a good job of comparing intensity and/or type of attraction and I think that's what he was trying to do to give you an idea (like Popeye is a round floating water ride like Kali) or Buzz is "like" MIB in that you ride it and can score points on it...like a moving video game. For the most part, they are all absolutely very different. But I'm not offended! :teeth:

To answer your main question, there is PLENTY to do at these parks without being "thrill ride lovers", for sure!!! :thumbsup2 :cool1: :bounce:

But as I said...read these boards and post your questions...everyone is very helpful here and you'll be in good shape! :)

Im going to disagree with Spiderman compared to Star Tours...a much better comparison would be to Dinosaur at AK but with much more movement in the vehicles (they can spin) and full 3D in most of the ride...but overall it's one of a kind. Youre moving through live scenes with real city buildings, and seamlessly watching the 3D movies go by as well.

THANK YOU SO MUCH !! I really appreciate the time you took to put it into language that I could understand ! I realize that it is not WDW and get the feeling that you might be risking a flaming, but I hope everyone sees how kind you were being for me !! I do !!
Ms Disney....Thank you to you too!! I was concerned that UA/IOA might be too thrill ride intensive for my tame kids.
How many days would we need and what is CityWalk?? Would June 24 through July 6 be too hot and too long ?? I might consider a day trip to Tampa (we will have our car) but am kind of......dare I say......Disney-ed out ! (Please don't flame me - but it was getting a bit boring for us the last time...sorry.. ) Thank you all !!

PS - Is the "special" prices that they are running for the park tickets/hotels "really good", "OK", "Typical", or "Not Special !" ?????

CityWalk is a combination of restaurants, clubs and stores similar to Pleasure Island/Downtown Disney

We always did the Disney thing and decided to make the switch to US/IOA in November......well we're hooked! We will be returning April 17th and bringing some Newbies with us! We loved it and can't wait to get back there :thumbsup2

I agree with most of DanDave's comparissons.

I have been goingto Uni since 1990. I have only gone to Orlando twice in 16 trips without going to Uni. I'm as comfy at Uni as I am at WDW, and I know the Uni parks as well as I know the WDW parks.

A trip to Orlando is not complete for me without a trip to the Uni parks. I just wish that Uni had a budget hotel like Disney's Value resorts; even with the excellent Passholder discounts, the three existing Uni resorts are out of my very modest price range. But that doesn't matter - I still have plenty of fun and rarely have trouble getting lots done without FOTL.

Now, if we can just convince a few of the Disney zealots that Uni is not an Evil Empire of Dark Magic...

Hi guys!! That whole comparison thing went over much better than I had anticipated. :teeth:

You are very welcome Theresa!! :wave2:

I think the comparisons were great & right on the mark.

It's impossible to compare Spidey to any other ride, at least I've ever ridden. I agree it's a little similar to Dinosaur and Star Tours, but IMO, there's Spidey, then all other theme park rides :)
