Loungefly Fans-Backpack Strap Suggestions????

i was lovingly gifted with a couple of disney loungeflys for mother's day. love them BUT i don't tend to use a backpack and would prefer to keep the straps secured and just use the small handle. that small zip tie like thing doesn't last long so has anyone found a solution/resource (i don't want to use a traditional zip tie b/c i fear it will shred the strap).

Can you sew on a button? Cut a short piece of ribbon, seal the ends by heating them with a match, then loop it around the straps and sew a button through the whole ribbon loop where the ribbon overlaps between the straps.
