Lott Steps Down to Run Thurmond Campaign
(2002-12-17) -- After days of suspense, U.S. Senator Trent Lott, R-Miss., finally revealed that he will resign from the Senate to become campaign chairman for former Sen. Strom Thurmond's 2004 presidential bid.

"I thought he should have been elected president in 1948," said Sen. Lott. "And now that he's available, it's time to right the greatest injustice of the 20th century."

Mr. Thurmond will forego the normal formation of an exploratory committee, according to an unnamed aide, and simply announce his candidacy later this week. Similar to his 1948 attempt, Mr. Thurmond will run as a third-party candidate, but not as a segregationist this time.

"We've formed a new political party this week," said Sen. Lott. "My good friend from South Carolina will head up the ticket for the Anti-Public Relations Party. We're going to say whatever we darn well please, and if you reporters want to cover the campaign, get your own airplanes. Good luck catching up to the man in the wheelchair."
