just home from a brilliant holiday. Today there was a long, heavy rainstorm. Loads of rides shut down due to lightning and rain. We made a fp for monsters inc and swam over. There was a security guard yelling rides closed- rain shelter only. When loads of rides are down- why close indoor ones?? It didn't make sense especially as we headed through the tomorrow land terrace that was nearly empty and a good place to hide from the rain.

Maybe it is to encourage people to leave the park? Just rain is one thing, but when there is lightning safety issues come into play. They don't want anyone getting struck by lighting in the park! Or, what happens if they lights go out while ride is in motion. Does that even happen? Up here in Jersey, it's not uncommon to lose power during a thunderstorm. It's just a guess. I could be totally off base.

I think that answered your question. As a PP said, if there was a lightening factor, Disney World doesn't want people out walking around with that danger involved. So, they gave a safe and indoor place for people to stay warm and dry and not be in danger. Sure, the Tomorrowland Terrace is under cover but it's also outside and rains don't always come straight down.

Could be lots of reasons. I know when we were at DCA last year in a big rain storm we went to the parks hoping to miss the crowds on TSMM and it was closed because it had flooded.

This is what happened to us on July 4th, 2012. There was a bad thunderstorm that afternoon. We were also in Tomorrowland at the time and headed to COP for an indoor attraction out of the buckets of rain. When we got to COP they were ushering everyone in to multiple theaters at the same time and were leaving the doors open. My SIL had gone out to the parking lot to retrieve an item from the car. She called and told us they were holding her under one of the tunnels and while there she heard reports from CMs of multiple lightening strikes in the parking lot. We were all under shelter for about 45 minutes. Attractions were still down for awhile in Tomorrowland afterwards. They told us that they had lost power in that area of the park. We just headed to a different land and enjoyed the rest of the day, but were certainly grateful for our temporary shelters out of that storm!

Tomorrowland Terrace is a horrible place to shelter in an electrical storm.
Disney is darned if they do and darned if they don't it seems.

I think i shouldn't of been able to make a fast pass for it, walk over and it be closed. Take it off line or mark it close like they did with other rides. We weren't angry- more frustrated after taking the baby out in the rain, parking the stroller then told closed as a rain shelter. We there hung in tomorrow land terrace for a bit. Tinkerbelle was a walk on so we visited her for our last attraction before flying home. Alls well that ends well- but we thought it was silly to close one of the few open rides

You were leaving right after that but I'm sure if you weren't, you could have asked for and received an alternative FastPass. Did you ask when you were denied going into the attraction? You might have been able to get one to enjoy for another attraction that was not closed for the weather.

Disney understands there's nothing they or a guest can do about the weather and the closure of Monsters, Inc. was probably the best solution for the company. But, that's not always the best solution for a guest so I would have asked for something else to do since you would be leaving soon and wanted a last ride on something.
