I have our cards from the last trip in the notebook here and on the back of the cardboard holder it says "Disney is not responsible for lost or stolen tickets." So I guess if you think he's apt to lose it don't give him possession. If he needs charging privileges (assuming they're on your room), why not just get him a giftcard with a $ limit instead.
I lost my card on our last trip - I still think it was not handed back to me after usin git to buy food, but after trying to find it on our own to track down the card a manger at the Morocco CS resteraunt called our hotel, they canceled the card and we were told to just stop at the desk when we got back to the hotel and they gave me a new card.
I don't know how old he is, but I agree. I let my DS 10 hold his card only long enough to get through the turn style and that was it. No way was I trusting him on that one. I don't think he needs to have charging privileges, and I think they won't allow children to do that anyway if I remember correctly. Get him the gift card and hold on to his card, better safe then sorry.
DD(6) had her own card in a lanyard and did well for a few days but ended up losing it at MK. I think she left it at the turnstile gate. We usually played a game where she checked my lanyard and I checked hers but I know I did not check this time. We stoped for a family picture on Main Street just after entering in the evening and I saw it was missing. We tired to find it and searched at the gate but ended up just cancelling it at Guest Relations. DD did not have charging priviledges. I was upset as card has so many other things connected to it. CM was very helpful and said not to worry that as it was cancelled no one could use it and no one could know our resort or room number as it is not printed on it for that reason. CM said that it happens a lot. Note to self it's not a good idea to put this responsibility on kids. It was simple to cancel and resort issued a new card at no cost. It did still put a damper on the evening so DD will not hold card again for a long time. My suggestion is to keep all cards with adults (who can loose them too).
Very easy to do, I lost mine (with charging privileges) somewhere in MGM. I just stopped at Guest Services at the front of the park and they canceled my old one and I had a new one waiting for me at the desk when we returned to SSR.
