Lost a good man today to alcoholism

I am so sorry for the loss of your friend
Such a horrific disease.

We had friends who son died at 50 with wife and 2 kids. Strange part is twice he went to ER for alcoholism but never went to rehab even once, Its like everyone was in denial.. Sad part was once the kids got out of high school they each moved as far away as possible, not a happy childhood
I don't know about calling it denial or assuming a lack of rehab is an indication of denial. There are a lot of people who simply want to live how they want to live and to hell with the consequences. The entire family may have been begging with the person daily and there is no reason to assume the alcoholic is not aware they are killing themselves but if that person is the, "Nobody is going to tell me what to do," sort it doesn't matter. The only person who can change things is the person doing it and this is true of alcohol, drugs, food, gambling, cheating, spousal abuse and any other vice imaginable nor force someone else to take diabetes medicine or antidepressants or be cautious with finances. No-one can MAKE anyone do anything, the family had to endure it they did not ok it. Psychiatry, Drs, Medication, Rehab is not magic, it does not make a person intent on choices decide against them, all it can do is support the person once they choose change, it is 100% in their hands.

It would be wonderful if there was a magic answer though, lots of people wish for that.

Life is just heavier for some people than others is all.
