Dear M-I-L And F-I-L are off to Las Vegas, San Fransico and Los Angeles in march, they wanted to know if anyone thinks a car is needed in Los Angeles?

They know Las Vegas they've been before and everyone says a car isnt needed in San Fransico, so they wondered what its like getting about in Los Angeles?
Anyone have an idea?

Any Info, gratefully needed, Thanx Beth :wave2:

Los Angeles in a huge place and a car is very useful if they have no problems with driving over there. Firstly where are they staying? We stayed at Newport Beach and a car was really essential to see the most possible especially if only there for a short time. The other alternative if they don't mind tours is to book a few tours such as the city tour and maybe one to Seaworld in San Diego if thats their kind of thing.
If you need any questions answered I shall try my best as we were only out on the West Coast last summer.
Claire ;)

LA is a big urban sprawl, IMHO a car would be very helpful in finding your way around. San Fran has quite an efficient public transport system if your visiting there, I don't think LA has anything to match.

I would definitely recommend a car as LA is so big and the sights are spread out. San Fran is concentrated at the tip of the peninsula and so is relatively compact.

If they want to do the touristy stuff, I would say transport of some sort, car, public or tour is essential. It is miles from Venice Beach to Universal City to the Hollywood sign to Disney etc.

Also, driving up and down the streets of Beverley Hills to see the property is a must!!

A quick note to confirm....yes, a car is needed in LA, no way around it...in fact, tourist life would be pretty miserable there without a car.

The "sights" are indeed all spread out, (though with some concentrated areas of interest)....depending on their interests, I wouldn't miss Santa Barbara (100 miles north), Beverly Hills/Bel Air, Hollywood, Santa Monica (pier & 3rd St Promenade), Marina del Ray & Venice, Pasadena, Laguna Beach, resorts of southern Orange County, Palm Springs & the desert towns, and if they admired Ronald Reagan, Simi Valley to see his presidential museum.

San Diego (100 miles to the south) is also worth visiting if they have the time, especially for Old Town, the Marina area (Seaport Village), La Jolla, and a quick trip to Tijuana, Mexico.

Hope this helps
