Looking to purchase a new camera and asking the experts!

I actually picked something completely different than we had been discussing! I got a Sony NEX-F3 that came with the kit lense. Target was offering a bundle package with the 55-210 mm lense so we got the extra lense as well. I got a few of the books that were recommended on here so when I get some time I'm going to play around with the camera.

We picked this camera because of the easy to use menu & quick shutter speed. We also liked how the camera took many pics them composited them to the best image (not sure of the correct terminology.) My DH is really impressed with the camera so far so that's a good sign.

It seems to have positive reviews at least everything I have seen. I hope we didn't pick a clunker lol.

That sounds like an excellent choice for you guys, and I'm sure you'll love it. Congratulations! :goodvibes PS be sure to post some pictures some time!

Sounds like a great choice!
While there is a strong argument that the RX-100 is better than the NEX with only a kit lens (the RX Zeiss lens may be a little bit sharper, plus it is brighter on the wide side). The NEX can easily trump the RX once you add better glass. And with that extended zoom lens, your NEX is capable of taking pictures that the RX cannot.

Congratulations - a fine camera indeed. I can't imagine you being disappointed with the amazing capabilities of that sensor - especially when you need to shoot in low light and see what it can do at ridiculous ISO levels. if you end up running into problems or questions on the new cam, feel free to ask as there are a few NEX users here...you can ask in the Sony Alpha thread or just start a new one with a question. I shoot often with the 18-55 and 55-210 lens combo, and it's a great pair with a very good range.

I agree here. Post processing is never more important than what goes on in camera, but it does play a role. How much you do of it depends on how much control you want over the final image. For a casual photographer there is nothing wrong with being happy with the jpegs that come out of your camera just like there is nothing wrong with sending film to the lab and letting them do the work. But just like a photographer might have stepped into the darkroom with film when they wanted to step up thier game, there is a time when many want to do some post processing.

Ok. I feel a little more comfortable now in the little photography skills I learned years ago and with the understanding that I am not a professional by any means. I think I got myself worked up with all of the technical aspects rather than fulfilling a buck list item.

I did get to experiment with my sister's Cannon Rebel T3i over the weekend and had a blast shooting my 13 month old. Reminded me that the end results will be life long memories. Oh it was so much fun!
