Looking for UT cat food - Update Post #39

my Persian had problems as well and I RAVE about Purina ONE as well!!! She has been on it for about 9 years and not one problem!!!! I would not give her canned food-just this product:thumbsup2

Thanks to you all for your input. I got my cat the dry PurinaOne and the Friskies special diet wet. He was so happy to have something different after eating THE SAME THING FOR 12 Years! Poor baby!

I mix about a tablespoon of the wet with water to supplement his meal.

I will watch him very closely to make sure he has no problems. Keeping my fingers crossed for him.

Once again, I really appreciate your help.

Did you go straight to the new food? Mine are so fussy, I probably would have mixed the new with the old for a while. Glad to hear he liked it! I hope he does well, UT-wise, on the new food. Please check back here after a while to let us know how he does.
I would so love to avoid paying for the expensive Science Diet CD. :cat:

I thought about easing it in but decided to just go for it and see what he did. He jumped right in and started chowing down! He seemed very happy to have something different.

I will be most happy to report back in a few weeks. Of course, if he does not tolerate it, I will know in just a few days.

I think I will try the Purina One. I don't work out of the home so I will watch him very closely. I will get him some can food and mix it with water as well.

I thank you all for the input and information.

One of my 3 kitties has UT issues and it seems to act up every 4-5 mths. The last visit, the vet put him on the Royal Canin SO33 but like you, $56 a bag, c'mon...just not affordable.

And, yes this would be every few weeks because I have 2 other cats. Did you ever try feeding 1 cat different food from your other 2, pretty tough to do when you're out all day.

After reading lots of positive reviews on Purina One's UT food I decided to go that route. Now, I have to say I also added wet food into their diet on a regular basis (just Friskies varieties) and they seem to be doing pretty well with it. I did notice the other 2 that don't have the UT issues were throwing up a lot until I added the wet food. They're also not crazy about the Purina One either (which isn't a terrible thing because one is a bit overweight)-but they will eat it when they're hungry. It's been about 4-5 mths since they've been on it and so far seems to working ok and MUCH more affordable. It's worth a try, you can always switch back.

Okay, I can report that after just 4 days, my cat's urinary output has doubled! He is very happy with his menu and enjoys eating instead of eating to live.

I use the PurinaOne dry and supplement with a tablespoon mixed with water of the Friskies Special Diet Urinary Health.

Thank you all and I will come back and update in a few days.

so glad this is working..our "free"(yeah right...lol) Persian began peeing blood and ended up on Sci Diet prescription diet a few years ago...I tried once to change her to one of the Blue formulas Petsmart recommended to me for such kitties...back to bloody pee...I am scared to try a switch...so def. let us know how you fair with the Purina. We had a problem with our Boston Terrier hogging the food, and wow that got expensive quick!..I started feeding the cat on a bench in the hallway that the dog can't reach and that has solved the problem...but 2 cats would be hard to separate.

I am watching Buster very closely. When he starts feeling ill, he hides under my bed, won't let us pet him, etc. So far, he's exhibited none of this behavior.

I can only hope this works well for him as having the wet food gives him a change of pace. I really feel badly that I haven't researched a change before now. I bet he's glad I finally did!

Good luck to your kitty, I'll keep everyone posted.

Okay, for anyone still interested, it has been two weeks since the big switch to the Purina and I can report that if there was a problem I would know by now. I think that I can say we have a new cat food!

Thank you all for the input and suggestions.

By the way, I got a 7 lb bag of cat food at Petsmart for $12.99 on sale for $11.99 plus they had sent me a $5 coupon for cat / dog food making a bag $6.99 for a 7 lb bag.

Good luck, everyone with your 4 legged family members!

After reading all this info, I switched to the dry Purina One UT Formula 2 months ago and I'm happy to report that we are doing well on it! I still buy the Science Diet CD wet food and I give him a spoon full of that mixed with water every morning.

Thanks so much for this info, I am saving a bundle of money, now that we don't have to buy the super expensive food. :):cat:

We had our cat on the Purina One urinary health formula for years. It seemed to do the job.

Our male cat had two bouts of UTI's, the second while on the prescription diet food. We tried Purina One Urinary Health dry food and that's all he ate for years without any recurrence.

I'm so glad that it's working so well for you. Our veterinarian pushed it and the cat we had who almost died from his troubles never got sick again.

Bargain Alert!
I don't know if this sale is in all areas, but, Target has the 7 lb. bags of Purina One UT Formula on sale for $10.99
AND if you buy 2 bags, you get a $5 Target gift card! :thumbsup2

We also had a cat on the urinary tract food from Purina. He thrived on it for many years and even liked it.

Yep, Purina Urinary tract health food is the only food that my cat can eat and not get urinary infections.

We also were told by our vet to get lower ash wet food. We try to stay at 2.5 or under. Not sure if this makes a difference. But Junior is gonna be 16 next month and he hasn't had UT issues in quite a few years. :)

(oops, a little off track for the Budget Board)

Just saw that the Purina Urinary Tract Health food is available at my local Walmart. Just about 40 cents less than Petsmart but I have to drive 70 miles one way to my nearest Petsmart store.

Just an FYI! I hope for continued health for all of our furry children.

Yes, I saw it, too. Good deal! Got some bags for my senior cat (15).
