Looking for UT cat food - Update Post #39

I'm going to revive this thread again, for a bargain alert! :yay:
Any of you that live here in Florida and shop at Publix, through Wednesday Sept. 12th, the Purina One UT formula (and the other special formulas) are BOGO! Buy a 7 lb. bag for $7.39, get one free! YIPPEE!

BTW, we're several months into switching from Science Diet CD to Purina One UT and my boy kitty is doing fine with the new food. :thumbsup2

I hope everyone else is good, as well. :cat:

My poor kitty had to get surgery last year because of his crystals and we use Purina One UT formula. It's still expensive, about $10-12 for a 5lb bag, but we usually get it from Walmart, thats the cheapest place ive found it. good luck!!

I am glad that I saw this post....I have one kitty (out of my 5) that needs to be on the c/d. I'm going to try switching him to the Purina UT food...the price of the c/d is outrageous. Not only that, but he has gotten REALLY fat since he started eating it.

Science Diet is really very overpriced garbage. There was a time that it was one of the best foods available but now there are so many more better choices. Sadly, because they promote so much to our veterinarians it is just easy for them to recommend the food. It has really only been in the last year or so that we see vet offices getting wise to this.
I'm glad you found an alternative for your Kitty.

:cat:UPDATE:

My 10 yr. old male cat has been doing great on the Purina One Dry UT food, for over a year.

I was still getting the Science Diet canned UT food until recently.
I just couldn't justify $60 for 24 cans anymore. After coming back and reading these posts again, I decided to try the Friskies Special Diet wet food.

The great news is, all 3 of my cats are crazy about the Ocean Whitefish Dinner Pate and my kitty with the UT issues is doing fine on this food.
As I did with the Science Diet CD, I still mix the wet food about 50/50 with water to get more moisture into their diet.

.46 cents a can (Walmart) compared to $2.50 a can? Amazing! :cheer2:

I hope all the other kitties with UT issues are doing well. :grouphug:

I'm so glad that your cat is reacting well to the Purina. Our veterinarian recommended it and even though I was a little skeptical, we tried it and our cat thrived. He loved it and lived to be quite old without any further issues.

Just wanted to second (or third) the shout out for Purina One UT formula (blue bag). I tried the Science Diet and my cat didn't really care for it... and neither did my budget! I did change to a cheaper cat food after she seemed "cured" for a while and of course the UTI came back... so back on the Purina she went and has been fine ever since! I get it Target, on sale, with coupons and occasionally a gift-card-back offer!.................P

Just read the post about the cat food being on sale at Target with a gift-card-back offer.... and I am the current holder of a 5% Target Pharmacy rewards card. Hopefully I can get my shopping trip organized enough to use it this week so I can add the cat food to the list! I've been holding off using the card so that I can buy many of the supplies I will need for DD's graduation party.

I started this post over a year ago and I'm so happy to report my cat is still doing great! Glad to hear so many success stories!

I just wanted to put my input in in case anyone was considering this. My cat who is now 13 was getting the urinary infections over and over again. We ended up getting him the surgery. The surgery was called perineal urethrostomy ("PU") (basically they took the male part and made it into a female part). I was a littled worried about getting the surgery because of the price, would he live long enough to pay for the surgery, would the surgery actually stop him from getting the blockages and would it bother him about his private part. Well it has been around 4 or 5 years. He has not had another blockage. He doesn't seem bothered by the difference. I am glad that I did get him the surgery. Just wanted to give some info if anyone was thinking about it.

Just wanted to point out that the sale on the cat food was posted a year ago! Sorry, I wish it was current! ;)

This is what I feed my cat with a UTI. The vet recommended it, I also mix it with the C/D cat food so it makes the C/D food stretch further.

She came done with a UTI 6 months ago and her urine ph was 8 and the normal range for a cat should be 6.0 -6.5. Well I took her in for her shots 3 weeks ago and had them test her urine again and it was 6.4! This food has 3 types of cranberry ingredents. Although the package is for weigh control it has helped her urinary system. Plus I give her one can of wet food a day..

I just had a $500 vet bill for my cat for the same issue. We also left the office with Hills s/d urinary tract food. He was better for about a week and then blood in his urine again. I started reading and doing a TON of research on my own. One thing that comes up over and over is NO DRY FOOD for cats. They don't get enough moisture from it, aren't natural drinkers (because they should be getting liquid from their diet) and they don't do well with carbs/grains.

I know I'll get a ton of argument for this, because people have good vets that mean well and push these foods. Some will do well with dry. But it's isn't the best for them. I've switched my male (who is prone to these infections) to an all wet diet and he is doing much better. Again, some cats will do ok with dry, and mine did .. until they didn't.
I've switched to all wet food (Weruva) and plan to start making my own and feeding raw instead. It's more work, but much cheaper, and better for them. This isn't something I suggest doing without research and careful planning. Everything I read said over and over, even all canned is far preferable to dry and it will help prevent obesity, diabetes and these urinary tract issues. We've also switched to distilled water in their fountain. Again, do your own research, but this is an excellent place to start:)
