My cat is on Hills Scienc Diet cat food for urinary tract problems. It is so expensive, $56 for a 17 lb bag. Is there something cheaper out there that works just as well?

His cat food bill is killing our budget as our other eats it too.

Thanks!

Yikes, that's a lot for Science Diet! We feed our 4 cats Science Diet, but it's not nearly as expensive! Where on earth are you buying it? I just bought a 15.5 lb. bag at Petsmart....it was $30 with tax using the Petsmart rewards card thing.

I was thinking about you last week...I'll email soon! Hi to your family.

Hi there! I will call and see if they carry the C/D which is what I would need. That is 1/2 of what I pay now.

We're all doing well. Looking forward to your email.

We had our cat on the Purina One urinary health formula for years. It seemed to do the job.

We also had a cat on the urinary tract food from Purina. He thrived on it for many years and even liked it.

I have a cat on Royal Canin SO for UT but I have to get it from the vet because it's prescription...he gets crystals in his bladder. I think one of the most important thing to do for a cat that has to eat specific food for urinary issues is to give them more water. Make sure you're giving him some wet food in his diet and my cat has been doing great (without any blockages or accidents for over a month) after I started putting even more water in with his wet food. I also got him a water fountain which helps keep the water oxidated so the cats like it more. So whichever food you find remember: moisture, moisture, moisture- it's good for their bladder.

Mine gets crystals too and almost died from it when he was 7; he's on the prescription Purina Vet Diet: http://www.petfooddirect.com/produc...ary-Diets-UR-St/Ox-URinary-Feline-Formula-Dry

It's about the same price as OP posted.

However, exactly how much are you feeding the cat? I have one cat eating 3/4 cup a day, and his food lasts for around 3 months every time. So, when it's $50 up front but costing me less than $20 a month, I can handle that easily. Make sure you are feeding what they need, not what they want. The vet can tell you the total amount they should be eating.

Also, if you feed on a schedule you CAN segregate the cats so one gets one meal and one gets another; it's not super-easy but it would be a lot cheaper. We have an autofeeder for our cat so he gets 1/4 cup at 8 a.m. and 1/2 cup at 5 p.m.; he loves that thing!

Our cat was on the C/d Science Diet for about 8 years. He died of kidney disease and there is some evidence that the C/D type food caused it. We can't prove that but if my cat now was told he had to go on it, I would get a 2nd opinion first. The food was cheap compared to the cost of keeping our cat alive on iv and 2 types of medicine for him to only last 3 months.

Since he has had UT problems..I would not switch unless you spoke to your Vet.
It is a pain, but you do need to somehow stop the other cats from eating it...that wll keep your costs down. but then make sure he is not eating their food.

We have been using Special Kitty Urinary tract from Walmart.

We also feed a quarter of a can of canned food that we mixed with water to make a soup consistency. The more water he drinks the more he goes and better chances of crystals not attaching themselves together.

We uses 9Lives Plus Care. Our older guy has been doing fine with it for the last few years.

My cat had some crystal issues a few years back. Vet gave us several different foods to sample to see what he would like. He preferred the Purina One UT formula which was one of the samples. I was so happy because that was by far the cheapest and most accessible of the options and vet recommended! I buy a 16 lb bag at Petsmart for around $20. He's been on it for several years with no new issues or problems.

I wish I could help, but I'm in the same boat.
The price you are paying is the going rate for Science Diet Prescription CD dry food. And, of course, it's only available at the vets. We also feed our 9 yr old. male cat that has had the UT problems, the wet canned CD food. I add extra water to that and make him "soup" to get more water into him.

I am scared to change food, because the one time I did, we ended up back at the vet ER. We've been good for about 6 or 7 yrs. He was very young when the problem started.

You can ask if there are any coupons available. Occasionally, I've gotten lucky. The Hill's website sometimes has them, too.

Good luck! :cat:

We buy Purina Urinary Health food for our cat with problems- both of them eat it, but the kitty with problems also eats a can of wet food once a day, which is urinary health food as well. He ends up not eating as much of the dry food because of it.

The dry food is available at Target and at Petco, and the wet food is available at Petco. I'm not totally sure of the cost, but it's nowhere near $50 a bag :scared1:

I think I will try the Purina One. I don't work out of the home so I will watch him very closely. I will get him some can food and mix it with water as well.

I thank you all for the input and information.

Our 13 yo ocicat was on Purina UT Health for about 10 years. We switched him over to their Sensitive systems food when he started to seem to have an upset tummy a lot--but for a very long time the UT worked very well. Usually I can get the 18 pound bags of Purina at Petsmart for about $20, sometimes a little less when they have it on sale.

We also feed my cat the C/D dry food along with Friskies special diet moist food (which you do not need to get from the vet!) I know there was a $10 off coupon for the science diet C/D dry food online a few months ago.
