Hello - I'm :flower: trying to stay on a budget and eat out less. I'm looking for a recipe to make the taco seasoning powder instead of buying packets. Also looking for a good recipe for chinese plum sauce for cashew chicken. Thanks in advance if you can help.

Not sure about the two you want, but I wanted to share my recipe site with you.

It will allow you to create a recipe list, customize shopping lists, etc... for FREE! This is one way I have saved over $600 on my food budget this year so far!

Instead of using taco seasoning, I just use a jar or two of my favorite salsa, a hefty amount of cumin, and sometimes a little chili powder. I like the flavor much better than the packaged mixes. If I have fresh cilantro, I also cut up some of it and add it.

I am with swilshire-My DH is originally from San Antonio so we always have cumin, chili powder and salsa on hand for taco/mexican food seasoning. I always saute some onions in my meat first and add in the seasoning with some garlic and maybe a can of green chilies! YUMMY this is making me want some tacos at 6 am!!! :rotfl2:

I don't know if you have a BJ's, but McCormick Taco seasoning is a whole lot cheaper there in the large container - about 6 bucks for enough to make 20 lbs. of hamburg. Also Taco shells are MUCH cheaper there also.

Homemade Taco Seasoning:

3 Tbsp chili powder
1 Tbsp garlic powder
1 Tbsp onion powder
2 tsp ground cumin
2 tsp salt
1 tsp black pepper
1 tsp red pepper
1 tsp oregano
1/2 tsp paprika

Mix well. Makes enough for approx. 5 pounds ground beef.

I make this all the time and just store it in my cupboard....I find it much more flavorful than the packaged, and it has wayyy less sodium. Plus, if you are following Atkins or South Beach, it is lo-carb as well. It is more spicy than packaged, so if you are sensitive to that, you might want to play around with the amounts of red pepper.

Enjoy!

Have you tried asking on the Cooking board here? I always have luck asking the people there - they have some great recipes! :cheer2:

If you have a Sams Club they have huge containers of taco seasoning, also many other spices. Much, much cheaper than buying individual packets!
