Looking for suggestions for a hotel in San Diego

BF and I go to Vegas every October (first weekend) to visit his Dad and help with a car show Dad puts on there. We usually go somewhere after Vegas, last year we went to DL. This year we decided we'll probably drive down to San Diego, for about 4 nights.

I'm looking for a fairly nice place to stay. I usually stay at Dana Inn and Marina, which I like a lot, but it's more of a "motel-like" atmosphere, and I'd like to stay at a place a notch above this time. Preferably something on the bay or ocean, or with a view, in the Mission Bay or Coronado area. I'm looking for something around $150-$175 per night.

I was looking online at the Bahia Resort which looks nice, and another one near Coronado (can't remember the name, I think it was part of the Marriott or Holiday Inn chain).

Does anyone have any hotel suggestions for me?

Mahalo!

The Coronado Marriot used to be Le Meridien when I lived there. It was beautiful then, and it was right on the bay. It's still highly rated on Fodor's.com. Have you considered the Hotel Del Coronado? That overlooks the ocean, and it's a lovely, grand, old hotel. I'd stay there in a heartbeat!

I wanted to second the Hotel del Coronado. It's a lovely hotel and a local told me that they have specials from time to time. Coronado Beach is rated one of the best and Coronado Island is a wonderful place IMO. I hope to get back to San Diego late this year or early next year and I will try to stay at the Hotel Del for sure!

I thought about staying at Hotel Del Coronado, but it's a little more than I wanted to spend this year since we have another big trip to the Big Island in July (plus, I do all my Christmas and clothes shopping in Vegas!).

WilmaBud, I'll check to see if the Coronado Marriott is the one I was looking at earlier, thanks!

Anyone else have any suggestions?

Sorry Kendra, I was going to suggest the Hotel del Coronado too. We lived there for a short time so we didn't spend any time in the hotels, I just know we walked through this one to the beach one day and it was nice. Good luck with your search and have a great trip!

Thanks Debbi!

Gee, with so many great recommendations about the Coronado, maybe I should just splurge and stay there anyway??

So Debbi, what time is it over there in Italy right now? It's currently 10:25 p.m. over here in Hawaii.

Kendra, I am not sure what the time difference is from Hawaii to Italy, but I can tell you we are 6 hours different than EST, so that would make us 9 hours ahead of PST. Is there a time difference between Hawaii and California?

I just looked it up on world time and it shows an 11 hour difference from Italy to Hawaii. WOW!

I received a promotional post card recently from The Del, so you may want to ask about prices, telling them about a promotional post card that you read. Also, you may want to consider the Marriott Resort and Marina. It is a great location. Easy walking distance to the Gas Lamp district, an quick drive to the zoo, Old Towne and up the coast. I love San Diego....almost as much as I love the Big Island. Where are you staying and what do you plan to do?

Luv Tigger,
I did a search on Expedia, and I saw on there that the hotel in coronado that I thought was a Marriot is actually a Loew's resort now. Anyway, it's a little cheaper than the Hotel Del, but it looks beautiful, and it's a gorgeous location. Apparently, you can take your pets, too!

I used to live just a couple of blocks from the Hotel Del, and boy, do I miss Coronado! I haven't been back in 12 years :( . One of these days, I'm going to take my kids out to San Diego and show them Mom and Dad's old stompin' grounds!

Let us know where you end up staying. I know you'll love San Diego, no matter what. It's an awesome place! Have fun!

We've done several trips there from Phoenix. We've stayed at Bahia, which was very nice and very reasonable. It also is convenient to the beach, has a nice marina and used to do the party boat, which was one of the best times we've had. We've also stayed at the Catamaran Resort which was very convenient to the restaurants in the Pacific Beach area, also has a nice marina and is on the same party boat path as Bahia. There is a Best Western Inn by the Sea, that is a pretty basic hotel but in an unbelievable location. We also stayed at the Marriott in La Jolla, which is not on the water but is close to some of the best restaurants and shopping, and just a short drive from La Jolla Cove. Oh how I miss those trips...
