HI all...looking for any salt free or low salt recipies or easy to cook things. My father was just started on hemodialysis and I'm trying to help my Mom out with some ideas.

Or any items we can buy to make cooking easier for her...she HATES this chore!! I figure I will end up cooking a few meals a week.

Thanks in advance!

Hi Poohlover,

Just saw your post and wanted to pass along a couple of ideas. We generally do not salt anything in the cooking process, rather leave it to individuals at the table. Personally I almost NEVER salt anything anymore.

However, we do use several other seasonings and LOTS of herbs and spices. Mrs. Dash in all her variety of flavors is a great substitute for salt. I especially like her garlic & herb version.

The other thing, which the doctor probably told them, is to watch prepared foods. It is amazing how much salt (sodium) is hiding in the strangest things. So label reading is really important.

Good luck!

thanks so much for your reply! that is the sort of thing that I need...do you know how much sodium spagetti sauce has in it?? LOTS! I did get them the Mrs. Dash seaonings. My mom hates to cook & anything prepared or pre packaged is way off limits! Any other help is VERY welcome

thanks!! will do those searches later...if you find any low sodium snacks that will help too! good luck with your BP!

Poohlover,

When I first started really watching my sodium intake that was the biggest "loss" - the missing salty, crunchy snack. For myself, I found that the butter light microwave popcorn that is sold by Boy Scouts (sorry I don't know who produces it) wasn't too bad. Not something I could (or wanted) to eat every day but it was a good snack. You'd need to check and see how it fits into his precise restrictions.

Raw veggies sprinkled with Mrs. Dash are my general substitution and the Walden Farms no carb ranch dressing is also essentially sodium free to use as dip.

Speaking of you'd never believe how much sodium is in THAT...anyone looked at a diet soda lately? :guilty: It is amazing. When I cut out that it took a lot of the sodium out of my diet.

Thanks for the ideas on the snacks! I appreciate it. My Mom is a little overwhelmed by all this change. She said she spent one whole evening reading labels in the grocery store & was disgusted by what he CAN'T eat. I am in the process of buying some books for her & me...really makes you think about what you eat normally!
