So, I am looking at getting a new job...I have been thinking to apply to some local banks and credit unions for teller positions. Does anyone out there do this kind of work and how is it? What is the pay like? Thanks for any input!

I work as Customer Service Rep for a bank. Its really according to where you live as to how much you will make, but it's pretty average I think. Banking is great though, because of the hours that you work and the holidays, all according to which company you work for. It's fun because you get to know your clients well as a teller, I started as a teller several years ago and loved it, just know that now tellers are required by most banks to sell bank products so it is definatly not just running transactions anymore.:confused3

Good Luck!

Thanks. I have lots of research to do! What do you mean by selling products - like cd's, loans etc? I guess I don't know too much about the field yet, I have got to get my act together!

It really does depend on which bank you work for. Credit Unions are less likely to have sales goals like most banks do. I currently work as a bank teller and you don't have to sell the products but if you do you get an incentive. I make an extra $150 a month just by sending people over to talk to the the Personal Bankers, from there the PB's get the sale and we both get paid. I have work at a few banks but I like this current one the best.

Like the PP said being a teller is not just processing transactions. Tellers are required to cross-sell banking products. Working in a bank is great if you are looking to work your way up. The pay is average, but you can always make more with incentive payouts for cross-selling. Good Luck!!

Right now I am in a field where there is no working your way up anywhere...I am definitely looking for a job where there are opportunities! Thanks!

Former bank teller!

Yes, your main job is to process transactions, but you are also expected to review transactions and make small talk to help cross sell. Let's say a customer comes in an deposits a large check from an attorney. This customer may have just come into a large inheritance or insurance settlement, hence this customer may be ripe for an investment prodiuct. It isn't your job to sell the product, but you can either walk the customer over to a "desk person" or just note the customer name and reason for referral on a sheet and the personal banker will follow up via personal call or visit.

I would say you won't make much more than an average customer service agent at a department store, but the hours and holidays are better. You also need to be comfortable with money and handling large volumes of it. I easily had between 8K and 25K in my drawer on any given day. Usually larger amounts on weekends when more people were looking to withdraw. Accuracy is key!

Current teller!

Pay will be average, you may have some restrictions on vacation time (you may have to take x amount of days at a time.) You will have to process transactions & cross-sell bank products, which may include loans, CD's, different kinds of checking/savings accounts, IRAs, investment appointments, etc. The good news is that there will likely be room for growth; moving on from a teller to a more customer-service oriented position will probably be an option, and from there, other possibilities may open up.
