I've recently come back from a business trip to the San Antonio area and I have to say that I am in  with the area. DH and I have been thinking about moving South for quite awhile. Although it won't be happening for a year or two, I would love to start researching areas to try and find the right one for us.

I really enjoy the New Braunfels/Seguin area as well as San Antonio. I know I have seen that some DISers live in the area (I just can't remember who :scratchin )

So any info or input anyone has on these areas would be gretly appreciated. I would love to know about schools, activities, cost of living, etc. And yes I want to hear about the summer heat ;)

there are a zillion San Antonio threads. Schools are generally well rated but that comes with insanely high property taxes (mine are over $7k a year). Cost of living is generally pretty low and housing costs are also quite low. You can get something pretty nice in the $150-$250k range.

I think there is a ton here to do.

It gets hot in the summer but I also think everywhere gets hot in the summer. And we have air conditioning so I don't think about it too much. I don't send DS out to play at 2 in the afternoon in Aug but for me the mild winters more than make up for the hot summers.

I grew up in TX and have since moved across the country to WA state....

I would suggest the whole family go visit in JULY before you make any decision about moving down. The heat and bugs are much different than up North!!!

We've been missing SA horribly...and did love it.

We lived on the NE side of the city and had our kids in Catholic school in Selma. The experience was great.

It's hot there, and it rarely gets cool...much less cold. Sometimes it will rain for the better part of a month in the winter.

The things I loved were the Spurs (still love them, btw), Sea World, San Marcos for shopping, the Riverwalk, the outdoor concerts at Verizon, the drive-thru animal wildlife park, UTSA for my second college career, just to name a few things...

If you have a chance to move there, you won't be disappointed.

Thanks for the info everyone!

It is now the top contender on our relocation list! I could see myself becoming a Spurs & UT fan but I draw the line there. My heart will always be with Black & Gold - there will be no Texans/Cowboys allegances formed here :rotfl2:

I love san antonio and LOVE New Braunfels. I dont know much about New Braunfels housing or schools but the camping and outdoor fun is excellent. Our good friends live in san antonio on the north east side. I think its suppose to be the "better" part of the city. There is sooo much to do as other posters already added. San Marcos shopping is unreal. The water parks, six flags, sea world, and the zoo make San Antonio one of our favorite places. The river walk has comedy clubs, martini bars, and a great dueling paino bar.

Our friends live in a neighborhood with a pool and little trail. They have a 2 story older home that is 2400 SQFT and they paid $132,000 last april for it. CHEAP! There property taxes are only around 3%.

It is hot but the winter is great. July/August not so good months but being able to go swimming in December is fantastic! You can also go a couple hours south to Corpus or South Padre to great beaches. You can go north to austin for another great round of fun. You just cant go wrong in San Antonio!
