I am looking for an inexpensive pioneer type dress for my dd. She would wear a size 14 or 16 in girls or a small in ladies. I have looked on Ebay but I guess there are many others looking also because I keep getting out bid. Our school does a Pioneer Day each year on the day before the Thanksgiving Holidays.

I do not want to spend too uch because this might be the last year for it as we have a new principal this year.

I could get a new one for $60 on Ebay and the used ones keep getting hung in bidding wars and go for over $40. I really do not want to put that much into it and to make one would cost almost as much.

I have done a google search and everything points to Ebay or they are priced at $70-$90.

Find someone at your local fabric store to make one... shouldnt be too much money. OR... wait till after Halloween i would be that these dresses are going so fast because of that.

Check out local thrift stores. You might be able to find something that will work. You might be able to find a skirt and blouse, add a sash and matching hair ribbon. Good luck in whatever you decide.

Last year I needed one for my 10 year old and found several that would work at a local thrift store. She ended up with an outdated never worn Liz Claiborne pale blue dress with little flowers over it. It had an elastic waist and buttons going up the front. It was too long, so I took a couple inches off the bottom and made a sash. We put her hair in two braids, tied the ends with ribbon and put her lunch in a basket with handle. My mom has small feet and had some cute shoe boots that made the outfit.

I spent a week obsessing about an apron :sad2: She looked fine without one. I also wanted a bonnet, again we were fine without one.

We saw tons of outfits that would have worked (especially the peasant skirts), but this was the best one. Don't get uptight about it - you'll see a lot at the thrift/goodwill stores. A lot of girls were wearing a peasant skirt with a uniform white blouse (you know the cheap ones with the rounded collar).

Also, you could check your costume rental stores - I thought ours was a little high (about $25) but that's much better than $60 for a one time event!

Could you try word of mouth? DD's best friend may have a big sister, or your CCD teacher might have an older girl and three younger boys....

What does she need it for? Is it just for Halloween or is it for a play or something??

I have one that I made that I would be willing to give to you. I am not a professional seamstress, so don't expect a Ralph Lauren quality job. :)

I can send you a picture if you want. This is an outfit I made for Halloween a few years ago. It is a dress, bonnet and I think an apron.

Our school does a Pioneer Day each year the day before they get out for Thanksgiving Holidays. The school gets people to come in and show how things are made and used like they were back in the Pioneer days. Soap making, apple cider, how they hunted, games from back then, quilting, cooking over an open fire...that type of stuff. They like for the kids to dress up in that period clothes.

What size is your dress? My dd needs a 14/16 girls. That would be very nice of you if it is the size she needs. I would be more than willing to reimburse your shipping cost!!

Maggiew, you're a treasure. Wish there were more folks like you
in the world.

Arent random acts of kindness great!!! Maggiew YOU ROCK!

I had to use a pioneer dress one time years ago. My mom did something creative. (our family was always tight on money--so my mom was very creative and resourceful here)

I had an older dress that my mom sewed which was made of older fashioned material for another function. This dress was about 3 years old so it was a different proportion on top. She cut the bottom of the dress making it a long skirt and put elastic in it so it went from a dress to a pull on skirt. My mom would up doing something similiar to make a bonnet. Using the top part of the dress, she turned the material inside out and used it fro the bonnet. She cut a portion of this dress out and made the bonnet.

For the apron, I just used one of my grandmothers.

If you aren't a handy sewer, I would check goodwill/salvation army, thrift stores for similiar outfits. You might be able to find an older fashioned print that can be fashioned from a dress or long skirt. I don't sew but I can use that fusable web stuff that you use with an iron.

I would also hate to buy an outfit as well.

My daughter participated in a "living history day" that sounds very much like what your school has. She wore a long plain muslum skirt and beige t shirt and a white apron, hair in pony's with ribbons on the end. Looked very cute, she even made the newspaper.

I did the same thing!!! I tried to get one from ebay and kept getting out bid!!! I guess this is the thing to make and sell next year at this time, huh??? Even though it sounds as if you've got one from maggiew (aren't Disser's sweet?!) I was able to find a "Gunnesax" dress which looks like an old fashioned dress. I made a little apron, even though i don't sew...it was pretty easy to sew just the apron. I did have to buy a hat from ebay..but it was worth it..soo cute!

But I think that I'm going to learn how to sew these dresses for next year and ebay here i come!!!:thumbsup2

I never heard back from the poster who offered to send me one about what size it was.

Anyway...I emailed the teacher in charge yesterday to confirm the date since I was doing the grocery order for that week and it turns out it has been cancelled!!!!! Gee...I sure am glad they told me....I would have been in a big bad fix if I did not know about this. I am upset the staff did not tell me about this. Mt dd is upset too because she has looked forward to this for several years and now that she is at my school they stop it....I should have known though...the Principal that loved doing this is gone now.

Oh well...Thanks for all your help even though the plans fell through. At least I did save some money!!
