Looking for High Quality Bed Sheets

I never know what to get my parents for Christmas. They always tell me they don't need anything or want anything.

This morning I was on the phone with my mom and she was complaining on how bed sheets are so cheaply made and that she can never find high quality bed sheets like she use to years ago.

So have made it my mission to find bed sheets for them as a present for Christmas.

I'm looking for sheets for a Queen Size Bed, High Quality, No Iron, White Bed Sheet Set.

I buy my sheets at Home Goods and although they say they are high quality and the thread count is high they don't wear as well as I wish they would.

Please educate me. What thread count should I be looking for, what brand should I be looking for, etc. ?

Thanks, :goodvibes

The best sheets we have are from Pottery Barn. Yes, they're pricey, but they last forever. Always make sure the bottom sheet has elastic all around and is for deep mattresses. I have had some from some of the recommendations here, and they do not last. Pottery Barn has high quality soft cotton. Also, if you don't like them, return them ::yes:: We have 45 years experience, so have used many different brands, and these are the *keepers* for us :thumbsup2

We are total sheet snobs, to the point that when we stay at a hotel or at my inlaws we cringe at the sheets!

I don't agree that you can't buy good sheets unless you buy the sheets separately. We have gotten some fantastic sheet sets, including over 600 thread count egyptian cotton, that have come packaged together with both sheets and the pillow cases.

I highly agree with everyone who has recommended Tuesday morning. We have gotten most of our sheets there. In fact, that it what turned us into sheet snobs- one package of over 400 thread count Egyptian cotton sheets and we were done for. :rotfl2: We had a couple of over 600 thread count and those really did us in. I think most of the ones we have gotten from there are Linea Casa, but we have had other brands too.

Trust your fingers. Always touch the sheets before you buy them, even if you have to poke a little hole in the package to get your finger in to touch them. Just because they claim to be a certain thread count, or claim to be Egyptian cotton doesn't mean they will be soft or feel right. Don't buy anything under 300 or 350 thread count, and preferably something over that.

For the PP= DH gets hot easy. I would say nothing "sateen" or polyester. We prefer Egyptian cotton over anything else.

Don't buy the sheets at the kiosks you can find in the mall, arts festivals etc, claiming they are Egyptian cotton and a high thread count. They feel like sandpaper.

When my Mom wanted new sheets for her birthday a few months ago and Tuesday Morning didn't have any right then, I actually had some great luck at Bed Bath and Beyond. I found some Egyptian cotton ones there that were around 500 or 550 thread count and my Mom loves them. I'm not positive, but they may have been the Wamsuta ones they have online now. I know I was skeptical when looking at them in the store, but once felt them, I knew they would be good. Again, I would go to the store and touch them before buying them.

You can definitely find something for under $200. We've never spent over that amount. Usually the sets we buy are somewhere between $100 and $200. Those Wamsuta ones are only about $80, if they are the ones I bought for my mom, but again I'm not positive on that. I know the ones I got her came in different colors and had the same or similar striping on them.

I completely agree with the PP who said don't buy Calvin Klein, Ralph Lauren, or Dkny. I don't find them soft. DH showed up with some Calvin Klein once because he liked the color of the sheet, and I think we used them once before they got shipped off to our guest room, or maybe even sent out to the garage. Also, we bought DD a set of pottery barn sheets, but we didn't think for the price those had the softness we expected either, so those went back. In our opinion, we can find better sheets for the same or similar price.

DON'T BUY sheets with much more than 400-count (someone mentioned 420 -- that should be OK).

In weave quality, the best fabric is made with single ply yarns and have a single pick; but the highest thread count you can get with this type of construction is about 400. Above that, 2 ply yarns and/or multi-picks must be used and this is NOT a recipe for quality, lasting goods.

You can google for more information, not my intention to give "Sheets 101" here.

BUT in my opinion, forget all that stuff and go for true linen sheets. My mom would use nothing but linen and she spoiled me for life.

Cariloha sheets hands down.

They sell bamboo products. While bamboo can be grown in an eco-sound method (I said CAN)....the process of making it into usable fabric is not.

Making bamboo fabric raises environmental and health concerns because of the strong chemical solvents used to cook the bamboo plant. Don't really want to sleep on that.

I'll stick with my linen -- again -- cotton is OK, just keep thread counts around 400 as I explained in my earlier post.

In case anyone is still monitoring this thread ...

I agree with akcire that the old Charisma dot sheets (360 thread count 100% cotton percale made in the USA by Fieldcrest Cannon) are the bomb!

I'm determined to find the pieces for a Queen size set -- even though Fieldcrest Cannon is no more, and the only way to get the "real" Charisma sheets is eBay, vintage shops, estate sales...

Does anyone have any recommendations on where to find them?

There must be inventory of the original sheets somewhere, right?

Even if the colors don't match up, I should be able to find the pieces to make a Queen size set somewhere in the world!

Ideas welcomed,
TXGrl

You can get charisma sheets at Bloomingdales and Amazon.

Hi Shelly - thanks for your response. Yes, there are still offerings under the Charisma brand at places like Amazon and Bloomies, but they aren't the same quality as original production from the US plant. When the brand was sold, they moved production to India. I'm hoping to find original product produced in Kannapolis, NC which can only be bought in the second-hand or aftermarket.

The USA company went bankrupt in 2005

Target has some very high quality sheets, I have a few sets and love them. They are Fieldcrest brand, and there are also others that are very high quality. Egyptian cotton is regarded as the best quality. Thread count is also very important, I believe the Target Fieldcrest sheets are about 800 thread count per inch. I also love the sheets at Costco, definitely good quality or your money back. I have bought random sheet sets at Marshalls, Bed Bath & Beyond, and other places that are of unknown brands, claiming to be high thread count, and of high quality, and those sheets are long gone. The ones that have lasted are the ones I recommended above. Good luck!

Folks that gave recommendations- DH likes sheets that 'sleep cool' or don't retain hear as much. Do you feel the sheets you recommended fit that description?

Cariloha bamboo sheets are cooler than cotton - but they are expensive.

Eddie Bauer hands down. I have had 2 sets for over 15 years. Well worth the money.

I bought Eddie Bauer sheets too, some were on sale and I bought 3 sets.

MY problem is they I HATE HATE sateen sheets. They just make my skin crawl for some weird reason. And that is what is in most stores, with the higher thread counts. :headache: I can live with percale, lower thread count, actually.

The only problem with some sheets that I like, is that they wrinkle and sometimes need some ironing, which stinks.

I love the Target Fieldcrest sheets. They put little tags on the sheets that say side of bed, head or foot of bed. That way you know which way to put them on.

Another Target Fieldcrest sheet vote.

Now next Christmas, when you wonder what you can get them, Target has the 600 count sheets at 50% off for Black Friday. I bought my second set this past BF sale. Of course my credit may be compromised, but the sheets are fantastic. :lmao: Oh, and they come in their own little same-color-as-the-sheets bag!:thumbsup2
