Looking for help with Canon EOS Utility

I just discovered this forum, and was hoping someone might be able to help me out. I bought a Canon EOS Rebel last spring, and I have always used the included software (EOS Utility) to download my pics to my computer (running Vista). I've never had any problems until recently - I can no longer click the "button" to download photos in the utility. The option is just not available (I can see the button, but can not click it). It appears to be a connection issue, but I am not sure.

I can't think of any major changes I have made to my computer other than updgrading Norton to a new version a month or so ago..

Any ideas?? Thanks in advance for any responses!!

Have you tried shutting down Norton and trying it then? I had the same issue on XP and this worked, though Vista might be different. Wish I could help more than that.

EOS Utility is very flakey! Use a card reader to download photos.

I've only use it once, and that was to put my name in EXIF.

Thanks to both of you for your responses - I will mess around with it more tonight. Thanks again!

I've been using Eos Utility, and it's hit and miss sometimes. What is a card reader? I've never heard of that (new to the game, can ya tell?!).

I have always used this software since I bought my XTi. I find the automatic folder generation by date to be very convenient. While I have never found the software to be flaky on my system, YMMV at the end of the day.

I was curious if you have EOS Utility started before you hook up your camera via USB or after? I have noticed with Vista that I need to have my device related software running before I attach the device (found this for my camera, GPS and MP3 player). You can try turning your camera off then on again if you attached it before running EOS Utility.

The other thing to consider is downloading the latest version of EOS Utility and DPP from the canon website. I think the latest versions work far better with Vista. Also, DPP has some enhancements to the RAW processing features you might find useful.

Good luck!

Make sure you are actually turning your camera on. Just hooking it up via USB is not enough to have the camera be recognized.

Thanks - I have always launched the software, then attached the camera via USB and then turned on the camera. It's so odd since it worked well for a year and now it won't do anything...

I will try to download the latest version and see if that helps.

Thanks for your suggestions!

If this doesn't work, maybe I will pick up a card reader. My Toshiba laptop has a built-in slot, but when we tried to use that last year, 30-40% of the pictures came across distorted. A little research indicated that it could be because my laptop can't read my 8GB card properly, but I haven't looked into it much more since EOS Utility used to work so well.

Maybe it's time for a new laptop!
