Someone recommended Thompson Cottages in New Harbor to me, and that looks great to me, but is probably too rustic and laid back for my kids. Not looking for a real touristy place, either.... something in between would be good.

Any recommendations? Would like to have a decent ocean view, or be on the ocean.

And if you have a recommendation, can you tell me a few things to do that kids might enjoy?

Thanks.

That's a very pretty area.

Mount Desert Island is also very pretty and has a lot to do- Acadia National Park is gorgeous. You can stay on the "quiet side" of the island OR the touristy side of the island (there are lots of shops and restaurants, whale watches, sunset cruises, you can go out on a lobster boat, or take a cruise on The Mary Todd!)

My Mom stayed in a cottage last summer in Bernard (quiet side) and really loved it- it was on the ocean with access to the shore. I will get the name from her if you like.

York, Kennebunk, Kennebunkpoint, Biddeford, Saco, Old Orchard Beach, Yarmouth and Falmouth are in the Portland area (Maine's largest "city"). Rockland, Camden, Belfast, Searport, and MDI area are in the Bangor Area. Another option could be the Sebego Lakes Region.

What sort of activities are you interested in learning about for the kids?

Maybe going to the movies, or possibly a water park if the ocean water is too cold. I don't mind driving to get there. My kids will be 10.

there is a theatre in downtown Ogunquit
also you wouldn't be far from Splashtown Funtown , in Saco, right up the road a bit.

I'd like to give another vote for Acadia/Bar Harbor area. There's so much to do....great hiking trails, carriage paths where you can ride bikes or horses, ocean beach (brrrrrrrr), great lake (Echo Lake I think). All kinds of cottages, hotels, motels and B&B's to stay at. Lots of restaurants and shops. I went on a great whale watch. You can also take the mail boat to Great Cranberry Island. It's great to go in late July/early August, because the wild blueberries are in season. I've been there several times and have always loved it.

I will give you the name of a hidden gem; Drakes Island, in Wells! Downeast Maine. Quite a few of the homes are for rent on the Island. It is truly a beauty of a spot for families. And the best part is it is a breeze of a location if you want to take day trips North!!!!!

My parents have a home on the Island and stay there from May-Oct! I grew up on DI spending all my summers there. (We lived in Boston). (M&D go to FLA for the winters).

Call a Broker in Wells or the Kennebunks and request info for DI!!!!:thumbsup2

Do you have a certain time frame in August? Maybe you could pick an area based on a festival. Do you like parades, music etc?

I would also vote for Bar Harbor or the Boothbay area. One of my favorite places is Monhegan Island but that is best for looking out at the ocean or reading a book. Try a day trip in you are in the area though.

An MDI'er here:thumbsup2 It has to be the most beautiful place on earth..I love it. We have a place in Southwest Harbor (the quiet side). There are plenty of places all over the island, and off the island too (might find places a little cheaper there). We have a camp on Long Pond and do rent that out certain weeks of the summer. We are right on the lake and it is the most relaxing place to be. Swimming, boating, relaxing, BBQ, Lobster..can't be beat! I grew up summering there, and now my dd does too.
