As we have recently been given free flights from Virgin by way of compensation for our 46 hour delay we are now planning another, unexpected trip to Florida.

We are planning to fly over on the 25th July but, as our villa is let up until the 30th we thought we would head for Clearwater and the beach. A first for us.

We are looking for a good Hotel, near (or on!) the beach, ideally with facilities for children as these make a big difference when you have an only child believe me!!

Anyone got any recommendations?

Sorry but not much help as we only stayed for 1 night at the Hilton at Clearwater Beach and hated every moment of it. The hotel rooms (we tried 2) are quite run down and TCD had put us in the broom cupboards, I suspect.

There are lots of hotel around the area don't confuse the Clearwater Beach hotel with the one above, as I have heard it is very nice also the Adams Mark

You wont forget the beach in a hurry it is beautiful

We stayed at the Quality Inn which was beachside - it was pretty reasonable and nice for a 3 star hotel. Great sun loungers! Next door was the Adams Mark which looked fab if you wanted to shell out a few more $$$.

Sorry!

Forgot to say that the Quality Inn had a (small) jungle gym next to the bar / beach which kept our DD's (then 3 & 6) happy for hours - we were equally happy to sit and watch them with our drinks from the bar!!:) :) Probably wouldn't be much cop for older children though.

There's also a really good play area at the Pier.

We've stayed at the Hilton and Radisson Suites at Sand Key, just over the bridge from the main Clearwater area, both were fine. The Hilton is right on the beach, the Radisson opposite, you walk through the Hilton's gardens to get to the beach, or the hotel operates a little tram ride through one of America's top 10 national parks (Sand Key Park). They're out of the main commercial hubble of Clearwater, which we thought looked quite noisy at night- it all depends on what you're looking for. The Clearwater Trolley goes past both of these hotels.

The Radisson Suites were out favourite because they had a great pool area with waterfall for our DD, then 6. They also have a really good kids programme for daytime and evening, which she thought was great the couple of times she did something. The rooms are quite nice, separate bedroom and lounge area. Bedrooms had 2 x King beds, lounge had bed sofa. Little kitchen area and all rooms have balcony which overlooks the bay - so many dolphins, pelicans and rays to watch everyday when were were there in June. The lounge side overlooks the beach (gulf), but not huge views unless you're lucky with your room like we were, but the Bay views more than make up for it.

We stayed at the Clearwater Beach Hotel some years ago and this is right on the fantastic beach - it was a good hotel then, but I don't know about it recently.

Facilities for children? Well, the boys enjoyed the pool and going straight onto the beach, but I don't remember them having much else for children really, although there were lots of families there. We tended to go out and about when we weren't pool or beachside - we went to Busch Gdns from there for example.

( I booked with them directly through their website).

Hi,
We stayed for 5 days at the Holiday Inn Sunspree at Clearwater. It was a moderate hotel but right on the beach where there were lovely sun-sets each evening. Good pool area and we did see lots of children but can't comment on the facilities etc. as mine are teenagers. It could work out expensive if you rented the sunshades and chairs every day on the beach but then you are only on holiday once a year and it was hot:sunny: in late July.
