Looking for a few good books to read...

I'm looking for something that's an easy, but interesting read while we are on our 7 day Western. I like pretty much anything except romance novels. Any sugeestions? What have you read lately that just sucked you in and you couldn't put down?

Well, I don't think it's considered an easy read, but I am in the middle of Demons and Angels by Dan Brown who also wrote The Davinci Code and it is VERY good. It takes place about a year before the Davinci Code book and is set mostly in Rome. VERY interesting and not too techy considering a lot of the subject matter (or anti-matter as the case may be).

I plan on taking Davinci Code on our cruise as I've heard it's a must-read. I had high hopes it'd be in paperback by then but now I'm thinking not.

I read "DaVinci Code" in paperback over the summer. Great book, although nothing that I thought I'd like. I'm going to have to check out his others.

I'm currently reading "Deficiency" by Andrew Neiderman. Not bad so far.

I read The Secret Life of Bees by Sue Monk Kidd on our Western cruise last month. It's a lovely piece of fiction but it does carry an emotional punch.

I love to read! I also can't stand romance novels - yuk. One of my favorite autors is Alton Gansky He is very quick and interesting read. He writes christian mystery with a splash of scifi thrown in. I also like Ted Dekker ALOT. His novel iii (three) was a total can't put down. I NEVER figured it out until he revealed the mystery in the last few pages.. very good story. jmho. Have a great trip

karebear1: I also posted on your other thread; just in case you don't see it. I like the Debbie Macomber series set in a small town in Washington. The titles are all street adresses, and each book focuses on one family. The other books build on each other. There is a little romance, a little mystery--just very light reading. I took one on our cruise, and wished I had had the others--reading on Deck 4 was great.

I just read The Rule of Four by Ian Caldwell and Dustin Thomason and thought it was very interesting. A fictional story based on the mysteries surrounding the historical book--Hypnerotomachia Poliphili (a book written over 500 years ago with hidden passages ciphered w/in the text). Learned a lot of history while also enjoying a ficticious plot of characters. It was neat.

Have to agree with the post above about The Secret Life of Bees. Very sad, sweet, etc.

This is 3 votes for The Secret Life of Bees. I loved it and it's not too long - but you'll wish it was longer! Or if you are looking for something totally fun, I would suggest Confessions of a Shopaholic by Sophie Kinsella. It made me laugh out loud!

I'm not a big book freak, but I always try for something tropical.
I just bought A Salty Piece of Land by Jimmy Buffett.I re-read his Tales from Margaritaville on our last cruise.
Also good is Don't Stop the Carnival by Herman Wouk....it is a fun read.

My most recent can't-put-it-down book was "The DaVinci Code". But if you are looking for a fun story that doesn't take alot of concentration, I'd recommend the Stephanie Plum stories "One for the Money", "Two for the Dough", etc. Ms. Plum is a novice but lucky bounty hunter in the books not the author. If you like series - that one goes to book 9, I believe. They are not too long and you can get them cheap on half.com!

The last book I read that I couldn't put down was the Passporter! I am not a reader.

I recommend My Sister's Keeper by Jodi Picoult. Anything by her is well worth reading. Another suggestion is The Five People You Meet in Heaven.

Another vote for the DaVinci Code, great book. I took Skinny Dip Carl Hiaasen by on our last cruise. Good, easy read about a guy who throws his wife overboard on a cruise ship.

Another vote for Angels and Demons. I thought it was better than the DaVinci code. I also loved Secret Life of Bees, Lovely Bones, My Sister's Keeper and the 5 People you Meet in Heaven. For something light however, I suggest anything by James Patterson. (Sam's Letter to Jennifer, Suzanne's Diary for Nicholas as well as any of the Alex Cross books). His books have small chapters which make it easy to read and pick up between cruise activities! Happy Reading.

Sweetspot made what was going to be my recommendation.... Skinny Dip. The whole cruise ship theme.

I read the Da Vinci Code on our Eastern Magic cruise and it was excellent and I suggest you read Angels and Demons first. Just gives you an idea of his style. Not as good as Da Vinci, but still very good. Deception Point and Digital Fortress are two of his others that are a fast, easy read. They keep you interested.

I really appreciate all your suggestions! They're wonderful! I am making a master list and will take it with me to Borders so i can find some of these books and read what they are about.

My DD read Angels and Demons and really lilked it. You're saying you suggest reading it before the Da Vinci Code? I also have Digital Fortress AND Deception Point laying around here somewhere (now that you mention them!), maybe I should pack them up and take them with.

Is there really enough time to read 2 books on a 7 day cruise???

For females.....any books by Janet Evanovich or Sarah Strohmeyer are perfect books for vacation reading. They will make you laugh out loud.
