Looking at DVC rental costs, I think I'm making a mistake - please tell me if I am.

OK, there is the chart on wdwinfo that tells you how many points you would need for a particular rental.

We just returned from WDW and so I looked to see on this points chart what it would have cost to 'rent' points for a DVC location. So here are the details:
Arrived Jan 31st, left Feb 14th, I was pricing out a 2 bedroom place.

It said I would need 616 for a 2 bedroom at BCV at this time. So assuming $10 per point, that would cost $6,160 for the rental - YIKES - my whole vacation cost that much with food, flights, car, offsite accommodation, etc.

Please tell me I am calculating something wrong here and I could rent points and stay at a DVC resort without going bankrupt.

Thanks
Vickie

Well, where did you stay? You have to compare equal to equal so you would have to figure out what the cost would be paying cash for the reservation through disney for a 2br villa at BCV. Using the same season and cash rates for that time a 2 br villa would cost you approximately $9200.

Staying on site does cost a little extra, but it's well worth it in my opinion.

Yep, for the dates you mention, at BCV, it's 616 points for a 2-B/R villa.

Note you have 4 weekend nights. Weekend nights are more expensive than weekday nights.

If you checked in Feb 1st and checked out Feb 13th your vacation would have been 2-days shorter, but would have been 484 points.

Keep in mind you're pricing out a 2-b/r villa, not a simple hotel room.

Beginning in 2010 point charts are adjusted for all the resorts. Weekday nights going up, weekend nights going down.

If you go a lot, in the long run it'd be cheaper to actually purchase DVC instead of renting.

Have you had a look at the rack rate on the 2 bedrooms?? Most are around $700 per night!

I have rented a 2 bedroom from a DVC Owner and while I won't say what I paid, I would suggest that $10 a point is high and I would not pay this. You want 610 points so for those DVCers who know they cant use their points this year, and want to unload all or most of them on one rental, you might find someone who wants to deal! I do think you will pay $4000 just for accommodations so IMHO, if this seems high, have a look at renting the 2 bedrooms at Bonnet Creek - about 1/4 the price and just as clsoe to the parks as some of the resorts but not a Disney property.

If you book though Disney, it would be about $18k (based on the current rates) to book a 2 bed room suite at BCV.

On property is always going to be more. But there are more advantages to staying at say BCV.

First it's between Epcot and DHS. So you can just run back to take a nap or if you want to drop something off, or just make rope drop without getting up at oh-dark-thirty.

Second it's got a kitchen. I don't know where you stayed off property but this has a full kitchen, stove, fridge, microwave, dishwasher etc...

Third it's a huge space, sleeps 8!

Fourth you get access to the pool, which isn't included in the regular DVC pool hopping.

Fifth you get Extra Magic Hours.

So if none of the are worth anything to you, then staying on property isn't for you. And if it's not there is nothing wrong... paying the premium to stay at DW, isn't for everyone.

You're talking 2 weeks in a 2BR DVC accommodation. I'm not surprised at all.

OP - I agree with what the other posters have said so far. If you price out a DVC 2 bedroom villa on a cash ressie you'll REALLY be like :scared1: Holy Cow!! You are looking at an extended stay that spans 2 weekends at a resort that is a little more point intensive than some others. If you price the points required for SSR or OKW you might find that you need a few less than you do at BCV.

The ammenities of staying onsite are the cherry on top of the ice cream if you've only been staying off site on your previous trips. There's the time savings getting to the parks, free transportation (the buses are free), Magic Express is free to the resort from the airport & they'll even bring your bags so so you don't have to claim your luggage or rent a car, pool hopping, the DVC 2 bedroom villas have their own laundry & jacuzzi tub, king size bed in the master bedroom, Extra Magic Hours etc... I think you hit the nail on the head as soon as you said "off site accomodations". That's the biggie here. What did you pay for a car rental for that long? You can back that out figure out of staying onsite if you use ME. Staying onsite gives you the Disney Magic 24/7.

Another suggestion I would offer for you to consider is for you to look into renting points for a 1 bedroom unit at AKV rather than a 2 bedroom unit somewhere else. The Std. and Savanna View villas there sleep 5 - so if you're a family of 5 you wouldn't HAVE to have a 2 bedroom villa - that will save you a ton of points right there to rent a smaller villa. (The BLT 1 bedrooms will also sleep 5 but it's too new to know what may or may not be available to rent there.)

OK, let's look at the numbers.

If you book a 2-bedroom villa at BCV direct from Disney, the first 13 nights of your stay will be in value season,so that's $630 a night. The 13th is in peak season, so that last night would cost you $1035. Add it all up, and throw in tax, and your cost through Disney would be $10260.

So, by renting, you save $4100. Not too shabby.

Your average cost per night by renting from a member is $440. Considering that you're getting a lovely 2-bedroom apartment with a full kitchen, washer/dryer, and jacuzzi, in one of the most desirable locations on Disney property, with a pool complex that's a mini-water park....a 5 minute walk from Epcot and easy walking distance to DHS and the Boardwalk and other neighboring resorts (and all their restaurants).......

I think that's a heck of a bargain. But sure, it's going to cost you a lot more than staying offsite. You're paying for the location. When you do the math, realize that you can drop the rental car. You're going to get free transportation from the airport. And also look at the dining plan, depending on your eating habits, you can save a good bit of money with that.

Using the same season and cash rates for that time a 2 br villa would cost you approximately $9200.

Hmmm. I wonder if the OP could have gotten the 4+3 deal on a 2BR at BCV reservation and how much it would cost (including tax)?

You can get GREAT deals offsite - and you can get OK deals on DVC rentals - but they aren't as good as what you can get offsite and are often filled with strings - like renting an existing reservation just a few weeks out from travel or renting someone's distressed (usually in holding) points - but then you can only book 60 days out.

Staying onsite comes at a significant premium - no matter if you are renting points or going through CRO. Renting points has a discount over CRO, but if you are willing to rent someone's timeshare and stay offsite, there are way better deals all over Orlando.

Thanks for all of the feedback everyone.

I guess I didn't look at it in terms of DVC rental vs rack rates - oh now those are scary.:scared1:

We are interested in maybe buying in to DVC, but with a family of 5 wanting to vacation for 2 weeks at a time it seems like we would need to buy an awful lot of points. So I wanted to look at the rental option - as it would be nice to try before you buy.

Thanks for the info on the one bedrooms that sleep 5.

I will keep looking at the info.

Yup. What are your dates OP? If you are going before August 16, you can get as good or better a deal through 4 + 3 promotion from Disney versus renting from an owner, and they'll even pay you $100 to stay in OKW or SSR.

You have to ask how important being onsite is to you. If you don't mind staying offsite then there are much cheaper options than DVC. Do some reading on the boards to find out if DVC is for you.......I know hard to believe but it is not for everyone:teacher:

Resale Bonnet Creek (Wyndham) comes to mind, just about on Disney property and pts can be had for next to nothing.

It looks like you vacation every two years, so you would need to buy less then the 600 you were thinking of. If you bought 300pts you could bank one year and then have 600 every two years.

You honestly think that someone would rent 616 points for $4,000.00. If I do my math right is this approx. $6.50 a point? Factor in that maintenance fees are over $5.00 a point. If this is true please tell me the person that i can rent the points from for this price and I will sell my DVC contracts ASAP

I'd bet they were developer points. The PP is staying at SSR. But, you're right. That's extremely low for points. $10 or more is the going rate. More members get $12-15 a point.
