I'm planning a trip for mid September next year and want to rent points for it. I posted to the renting board, but it looks like just about everyone is looking for much sooner vacations. Am I planning too far ahead for renting? I know you can't book until 11/7 months out, but I figured it was better to try and make arrangements farther in advance.

Any thoughts/advice?

There's no harm in trying to find an owner you're comfortable working with now, but you won't be able to book, of course, until October.

October would be the earliest you could book. If you know where you want to stay it would be beneficial to find a member who owns at that resort. That would give you the 11-month booking window and you could book this October. If you rent from a member that owns at a resort other than where you plan to stay they will not be able to make your reservation until 7 months before your arrival date, at the earliest.

September "sells out" of DVC accommodations more slowly than any other month of the year. You really don't have to commit so far ahead unless you want something in very short supply.

I agree that it doesn't hurt to plan ahead and look for an owner who has what you want. Do keep in mind that most owners will consider renting to be non-refundable. Be sure you understand the owner's cancellation policy before you send money - they are not all the same and none are as flexible as booking directly with Disney.
